Injured pro-hockey player Wes Campbell turns to equine therapy at Keller Ranch in Nashville, where he meets rancher Maggie Keller, leading to unexpected healing and a holiday romance.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Widowed single mother, Maggie, runs a horse ranch and needs money quick. She worries about her son, Dawson, from Dawson’s Creek, because he has been sad ever since his dad died. (Which is reasonable.)
Wes lives in Chicago and is in recovery from a sports injury. Is he a figure skater? No, he is a hockey player. (Hockey is hot right now, with the gays and Heated Rilvery.) His assistant books a stay at Maggie’s ranch for horse therapy. They triple what they will pay to book an exclusive stay at the ranch over the holidays.
Dawson is very pumped about Wes staying on the ranch; he has a poster of Wes on his wall and loves Hockey. (Probably, Heated Rilvery!)
Wes wants two things when he arrives: no one to help him or know he is there. To say he is a skeptic of horse therapy is an understatement. Wes has to come around at some point because he can’t even get out of bed without falling over.
The horse doesn’t like Wes’ energy and knocks his ass down, because horses don’t mess around. After getting a massage from Maggie, Wes starts to change his tune. He actually spends time with Dawson talking about sports and playing ping pong to avoid horse therapy.
Wes eventually hugs a horse and has a panic attack. He tries to leave in the middle of a storm, filmed on a particularly sunny day. Because he is not ready to face his trauma. The storm comes and goes throughout the movie whenever it serves the plot.
Since Wes and Maggie aren’t going to open up to each other, a couple comes to visit and helps them understand one another better. Wes agrees to stay and give the horse thing a try.
CUE A TRAINING MONTAGE!
In a BIZARRE twist, they go Santa paintball shooting. Where they shoot Santa with an AI-made special FX of green splatters and people waving American flags.
Maggie and Wes drink wine on the back porch. He shares that his dad died in a tragic car crash, and he blamed his mother. Then they talk about God before making out. (Which strange foreplay.) The next night, they go out and play pool. He tells her that he likes her, but it would be unprofessional. So, then they totally hook up while a song about God plays.
Lifetime spends all its hockey budget on one scene where Wes gets back on the ice, and Maggie is the one who is too scared to skate.
Wes has been holding onto a grudge against his mother for becoming an alcoholic after his father died. Wes makes amends with his mother, which is good because it is Christmas. Wes even considers moving to the ranch to be closer to his mom and Maggie.
Dawson idodically posts a video of Wes on the ice. It goes Viral, and Wes gets an offer to make a comeback. Maggie tells Wes to go and live his life and leave her to hers.
In the locker room, on his new team, Wes isn’t feeling it, despite being surrounded by naked men. (Which sounds good to me!) Wes goes back to Keller Ranch and makes his grand gesture by interrupting the church.
They kiss, the end.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
PG!?!?! At Christmas?!?!
Weird to see Arielle Kebbel playing a widowed mother of a TEENAGER.
