Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When her daughter vanishes, a single mother becomes obsessed with a local urban legend about teens disappearing after a dangerous initiation ritual. As she starts to dig deeper, she soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a sinister killer.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

In 1999, a teen girl is alone in a fire tower at night. Could it be the night she disappeared? When she comes down, someone chases her through the woods and kidnaps her.

Cut to the present day, and the town is a sleepy suburban oasis, with Principal Jean Collins watching her daughter, Lyla, in volleyball practice. Riley’s dad thinks that his daughter should be playing more, and Lyla is getting preferential treatment. (Which could be true, see her mom is the principal.)

Lyla sneaks out and parties with her teammates. She is dared to climb the Fire Tower because it is haunted by a serial killer ghost. The one from 1999 perhaps? The team takes a selfie with Lyla before she makes the climb, chanting her name like deranged cheerleaders. When she makes it to the top, the girls pull the ladder and leave Lyla alone in the fire tower.

Jean and her ex-husband, David, notice she is missing, and they suspect it is a volleyball hazing incident. (Shouldn’t the principal put a stop to hazing?) David’s new girlfriend, Trisha, brings them bagels and tells Jean to “Stay positive.” That is hard to do because no one has seen her in 24 hours.

A search party goes out along with missing person flyers. Detectives look for answers, but want nothing to do with Jean’s PTA search. Jean is the principal of a school, so she can question the volleyball team at will. Instead, she kind of has a mental breakdown and locks herself in her office.

Detectives rule Lyla dead after days of no body or word from the teen. From the volleyball team’s account, Lyla was embarrassed and ran into the woods alone, never to return. Riley and Petra aren’t saying a word when Jean calls them into her office. Jean is put on administrative leave.

Jean decides to climb the fire tower herself, and after she does, someone in a black hoodie chases her through the woods. Next, Jean goes to a local historian and learns about the missing girl from 1999. That is just the first of many missing girls, and there is speculation online that the town has a serial killer. Jean spirals, worrying her best friend and David.

Petra wants to come clean and tries to set up a meeting with Jean, but ends up in a coma from a car accident. Someone is trying to keep Jean from the truth, but that is what the school library is for.

The Volleyball Coach becomes a romantic interest for Jean and helps her break into Riley’s house to see what they’re hiding. They don’t find anything and have wine at the coach’s house, and she finds Chapstick in the bathroom. He does a 180 and turns into a bad guy REAL quick.

Jean catches on a little too late, and the coach slams her head on the table, knocking her unconscious. He takes a shower, and Jean wakes up to find Lyla locked in a room. Lyla explains that the coach knocked her out in the woods, convinced her teammates that they murdered her, and kidnapped her for his sick enjoyment.

Jean and Lyla fight the coach, and I think they kill him. He killed the girl in 1999 and many more.

STRAY Thought

What the hell is a Fire Tower? Is this something Canadian’s have?

  1. To answer your question, a “fire tower” is a structure that people use to look out for forest fires. Thats why it was located in the middle of the forest. They usually look somewhat different to the one in this movie.
