Synopsis (via Hallmark)
When pop star Darcy returns home to spend Christmas with her sister and niece, she unexpectedly finds herself coaching the high school choir with her onetime rival, Adam.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The former pop star, Darcy, singing for a Christmas movie concert with a high ponytail. The audience demands she play her hit single “Sugar Rush.” The fans who come make Darcy feel VERY old. She doesn’t even have an agent anymore, but she does have a recently widowed sister, Gretchen! Gretchen insists that her sister come home for the holidays.
Darcy heads back to Ohio because she honestly doesn’t have much going on in New York with her singing career. She heads to the coffee shop, where she is ogled by a set of guys who hate Christmas, Adam, and Rick. Everyone knows Darcy. (See, she was a pop star.)
Darcy’s niece Megan doesn’t make the glee club. Darcy marches in and sees that it is her nemesis/coffee crank, Adam. At the local high school, Darcy talks to the principal, and he is excited that she is back in town. He even approves a sing-off for the county competition.
The rejects are bad singers, and we learn this in a Pitch Perfect rip-off montage of awkward auditions. Adam is giving Will Shuster from Glee, but like the jock version. (This man is built.)
Darcy is confused when she hears Megan singing in the shower. It is night and day when she is alone. Darcy tells Megan to just sing alone in the room and sends everyone out. Then she sneaks everyone in. It is enough of a shake-up to get them all sounding amazing!
Adam hears about the reject kids sounding good while singing randomly in a restaurant. Darcy tells him that they effortlessly took to it. Then she shows Adam a new song that she is working on and sings the whole song. It is the best song we’ve heard by far! (Could we not find kids who can actually sing?)
Megan and Freddy, a boy she likes from the rival team, decided to join forces and ask their coaches to create one group. Darcy and Adam reluctantly agree.
Adam and Darcy go to the bar and realize they don’t actually hate one another. They even hang out outside of rehearsals and plan a date for Saturday.
Darcy gets a call from the record company, and they like her new demo. She has a chance to sign a new contract. Which is exciting, but will she have to leave to high school before the big contest?
Training montage happens, similar to Pitch Perfect. I think Elizabeth Banks should get a directing credit for this movie.
The Saturday date finally happens! Darcy and Adam talk about her celebrity status and how arbitrary it is. They encourage one another to keep going and have great Chemistry! Both of them have struggled with relationships for different reasons. Adam invites Darcy to a New Years’ thing, and Darcy half-heartedly commits. They almost kiss at the end of the night, but she comes clean about the opportunity in New York. She doesn’t want to get too attached, and he understands what she means. (I appreciate the straightforwardness.)
In rehearsal, they decide to change up the opening, including BEAT BOXING!
The record label wants to fly Darcy to New York for a unique new artist launch. It is the same night as the concert. Darcy talks to her sister and admits she was beginning to envision life in Ohio! At a dinner, Darcy, again, is fully transparent and makes an announcement about the opportunity. Everyone is supportive; Adam even offers to give her a ride to the airport! (He is a keeper.)
Back in NYC, Darcy is super emotional. Adam sneaks a coach shirt into her bag, sending her over the edge.
At the competition, the high school kids are decked out in mustard scarves and hats. They take the stage. They are maybe actually singing here!
Darcy arrives just in time and explains to her sister that she worked it all out with the record company to have both things! Darcy kisses Adam backstage, and they watch the kids sing some pretty secular music while the audience claps offbeat. (OMG, Brenden Penny’s body roll about killed me, HAHA!) They win the competition! Yay!
Side Note
Where is my Sugar Rush 90’s music video! Come on, Hallmark!
Hidden Advertising featuring Campbell’s soup!
While this was a blatant Pitch Perfect ripoff, it was enjoyable. My only question is, what took Hallmark so long!?!?
Do you like Brenden Penny with or without glasses? I’m pro-glasses!
