Workaholic lawyer Lucy Miller (Bourne) is celebrating her promotion alone on Christmas Eve when a mysterious rideshare experience transports her back to 1999. Reliving the holiday with her mom, sister and best friend – not to mention her high school crush – Lucy gets a second chance to understand where her relationships went wrong. Will this magical journey help her rewrite her future or leave her destined to be alone?
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Lucy is a workaholic lawyer city girl with GLASSES! (with no lenses) Her gay assistant, my favorite new Canadian Gay, Spencer (Tom Hearn) asks Lucy what she is doing for the holidays. Lucy will be working and not spending time with her family; they think she is avoiding them. Lucy’s mom, the lovely Kate Drummond, is not too pushy. Lucy’s sister Alexa is a LESBIAN and sends a box of nostalgia from high school. 1999. It was the year their dad died and the first Christmas they celebrated without him.
While taking a dinner break from lawyering, Lucy runs into an old High School friend, Matt, who is in Chicago for an insurance salesman conference. He is very impressed that Lucy has made a partner. Lucy is surprised that Matt hasn’t pursued his dream of becoming a Broadway actor and has separated from his wife. Matt tells Lucy she avoids all the important people in her life. He, her family, and her former best friend, Nadine.
A pushy waitress sees the interaction and sits down, asking Lucy if she can do it all over again. Would she do it? Lucy says no because you can’t have it all! Lucy is weirded out and leaves, taking a rideshare. The driver is Grace, the waitress who needs to have multiple jobs in this economy. Lucy falls asleep on the ride and is surprised when she wakes up in Milwaukee. She leaves her laptop bag, phone, and glasses in the car.
Lucy uses the hide-a-key to get into her childhood home and is surprised to see her childhood dog. She thinks her mom got a new dog and goes to her room, laughing at the posters of Joshua Jackson. Lucy wakes up the next morning to “Kiss Me” and sees the calendar and newspaper say it is December 22, 1999!!!!!! Lucy sees Grace and asks her what is going on. Grace explains that it is her Christmas gift and warns Lucy not to change anything or that it will change her future, Lucy needs to work, but Grace tells her to enjoy her time in 1999.
Lucy sees her family and is surprised to see her mom baking. She is frantic about the grandparents’ arrival for the holiday. Alex is not an out-and-proud Lesbian. Lucy also runs into her friends. Matt is her boyfriend and calls her “lobster,” and Nadine is her former best friend who, in 1999, is her current best friend. Nadine is 100% on board for helping Lucy figure out why she is back in the past and thinks it has to be to redo a kiss with Matt.
Lucy jumps in and kisses Matt the next time she sees him, but that will mess with the space-time continuum, and Grace shows up to tell Lucy to relive the experience and not change anything. Lucy and Matt compete in some Reindeer Games. (Don’t ask.) They win as they should, and Matt tells Lucy he will always be there for her. We know that is untrue. Sometimes, good people drift in and out of your life.
Grace tells Lucy to stop worrying about doing the right thing and enjoy the moment. Lucy does when her grandparents show up for the holidays. Lucy gets emotional because she hasn’t seen them in so long. It is touching and so relatable around the holidays.
There is also a lovely scene with KWEEN Kate Drummond and the daughters talking honestly about grief. Lucy gives her mother great advice and lets her know that they are all in it together and grief isn’t going to pass in a day.
This movie should just be called Good Advice because that is what Lucy is doling out. She helps her sister come to terms with being a Lesbian without forcing her to come out. She also tells Matt to stand up to his parents and advocate for himself if acting is what he wants to pursue.
Nadine is disappointed to learn that Lucy isn’t making any significant changes to keep the promotion. Lucy promises to reach out and make things right when she returns to the future. Nadine tells Lucy that her loved ones are worth fighting for and she is wasting a second chance.
Lucy watches Matt in his production of A Christmas Carol; let’s face it, he is terrible!
Lucy plays pool with her grandfather and asks him if he could do his life over again. He tells her he wouldn’t change a thing because he loves his place. He tells Lucy that there is always time to change your life.
Lucy writes a letter to Nadine and rushes off to make a change. She gives the letter to Alexa and then knocks on Matt’s door. She gives him a mixed CD, telling him how she feels about him. She admits she was scared and tells him that she loves him, and he tells her he has always loved her, too. They kiss, and their new life flashes before our eyes.
College, weddings, kids, and Lucy breaks the kiss and has her glasses back. Everything is better than Lucy could have imagined, and she is happy, and so are the ones she loves so dearly because she has been in their lives the whole time.
IS ANYONE ELSE CRYING?!?!?! OKAY MERRY CHRISTMAS!
