Synopsis (via Hallmark)

Rose (Greene) is a Chicago-based interior designer, whose brother Sal (Pellegrino) is responsible for a Christmas Charity House Flip back in their suburban Ohio hometown. When a budget crisis puts this important project in danger, Rose reluctantly returns during the holidays to try to save the day. Not ready to face the ghosts of her past, Rose’s plan is to get in, get it done, and get out ASAP. But before she knows it, she is face-to-face with Brysen (Brown), her brother’s best friend, contractor and who just so happens to be the bane of Rose’s youth. With the help of friends and family, and buoyed by the season of giving, the trio figures out a way to work together for this worthy cause. As Rose works, she discovers unexpected love and deeper purpose along the way.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Rose is a busy designer working during the holiday. She gets a call from her Gay Brother, a handyman! His name is Sal, and he has won a charity design project for the holidays, much to his boyfriend’s delight. He asks Rose for some design advice. They have a charming relationship and aren’t working together on the family business.

Brysen is also a town handyman; he runs into his ex-fiance Bianca. She thinks he will never leave his hometown and feels sorry for him. Brysen works with Sal, and they are surprised to learn the funding for the project they are working on has been cut, but they need to get the project done on a budget for the Denver Cronical for a feel-good Christmas story. The charity house they are working on will go to the town’s principal. Sal tells Brysen they need to bring Rose to the project to help finish it on time.

Rose isn’t excited to work on the project because she is an interior designer NOT an interior decorator. Plus, Rose hasn’t been home since her parents died and isn’t ready, With much begging from her brother. Rose agrees. When she gets to town, he bumps into Brysen and spills his coffee all over him. They have a hate/hate relationship. It gets even more complicated when Rose finds out Wes is living in the house she will be staying in. They also share a bathroom.

BUT IT IS FOR A GOOD CAUSE! So, Rose and Bryce find a way to coexist and work together. Sure, there are a lot of eye rolls and bickering. However, when left to her own devices, Rose seems to be really good at her job. (There is a Home Goods ad in the middle of the movie, and I’m not mad about it because Home Goods is awesome.)

Rose runs into the principal EMT’s daughter, Catie, and her daughter, Arabella. They are thrilled to learn that Rose is doing the house and give her tips on their style. They seem like a lovely family.

Jake Hunter, the reporter, shows up and tells the guys he is excited about the Christmas Live show. He tells them they will film the moment when they hand the keys over to the Landreys. He doubts they will finish it but becomes more interested when he learns that Rose is involved. Jake Hunter was also Sal’s bully in 6th grade.

Brysen’s parents moved out of town, and his separation was unplanned and sudden, so his staying with Sal was unexpected. He opens up to Rose about this transition in his life while they look for Christmas trees. Rose collaborates with the Christmas Tree Farm owner. She manages social media exposure in exchange for a free tree.

Meanwhile, Sal and Jake Hunter have a love/hate thing going on. It’s clear I’ve seen way too much gay porn because I keep waiting for them to go at it, hahaha. The pair have great chemistry, and the stakes are high for Sal. If this doesn’t work out, Sal will lose the family business. Jake Hunter tells Sal to trust him, which he doesn’t

Decorating montage and tree trimming have surprisingly been absent for many Christmas movies this year!

The mayor comes to check on the progress with only five days left. She is worried that they are still painting and don’t even have furniture or decorations inside. That doesn’t deter them from going to the skating rink for karaoke. Sal sings terribly, and Jack Hunter is crushing on Sal’s outgoing nature. Rose and Brysen are nostalgic for the last time they were there in high school. They are happy to have the chance to get to know one another as adults.

An icey tree branch falls and makes a hole in the roof. The repairs will cost them a lot of money, and the branch smashed some sentimental ornaments, sending Rose into an emotional breakdown. Sal talks to Rose, and she lets him know it is hard for her because everything reminds her of Christmas’s past.

The Landrey family pitch in to pull off the impossible and work together tp get the house ready for the big reveal. Even Jack Hunter puts down the camera and helps. Then, they celebrate by making Christmas cookies. Jack Hunter and Sal talk about the bullying in middle school, and it all turns out to be a misunderstanding. Then Jack tells Sal that he is gay, and Sal realizes they are vibing!!!

Well, damn it, if Rose overhears Brysen’s ex bragging about reconciliation and leaves town to go back to Chicago suddenly. She has a change of heart when she sees the Landerys getting their home on TV and rushes back. She clears things up with Brysen, and they get back together. She is no longer run away Rose. They make out.

Sal and Jack do NOT make out, but they want to get to know each other better.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

There is a clear delineation between “old school Hallmark” and “new school.” This one falls somewhere in between.

No gay kiss????

The Home Goods #Ad was egregious and I still had to watch all the commercials.
