Synopsis (via Lifetime)
After the death of her mother, Jasmine finds comfort with Bill, the compassionate funeral director who handled the service. But when she wakes up inside a coffin beneath his funeral home, she suddenly discovers the horrifying depths of his obsession.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a girl in a coffin.
Cut to two weeks earlier at a funeral parlor where the guy from Downton Abby is a funeral director named Bill. He has a creepy demeanor and an even creepier hairline.
Jasmine mourns the loss of her mother to cancer, and Jasmine spirals into depression. She quits her job and can’t do anything because she blames herself. There is a guy with her named Kelvin; is he her brother, boyfriend, husband? IDK! Whoever he is to her, she kicks him out.
A lost scarf from the viewing brings Jasmine back to the funeral parlor. She picks out an urn to hold her mother’s ashes, and it is the final step. Jasmine admits to feeling overcome with grief, and Bill helps her by listening and offering her a spot of tea.
Bill takes Jasmine down to the morgue to get her mother’s remains, and Jasmine goes down with him. Kelvin calls, and Jasmine decides to take the call, but before she can leave the basement, Bill chloroforms her and traps her in a coffin. They didn’t waste any time. We are only 20 mins into this thing.
The coffin is in a secret room and has a night vision camera. Jasmine bangs and calls for help, but it is no use. Bill takes Jasmine’s belongings and throws them in a creek. He tells Jasmine that he is going to keep her to keep him company. When she asks why, he says he “likes her.” (Ewww.) He drugs her and treats her like one of the bodies her preps. Let’s just say Bill is into necrophilia.
While trapped in the coffin, Jasmine recalls better times with her mother. It helps her keep going when things seem insurmountable. She, of course, tries to escape but doesn’t make it far. Jasmine is trapped talking to a man who has no friends or family, only dead bodies as company.
Kelvin, worried about his friend/sister/girlfriend, breaks into the funeral home and finds the blue scarf that Jasmine went to get back. He knows something is going on. He confronts Bill alone at night and invites himself in. Not the best idea.
Jasmine tries to call for help, but she has a steak frits dinner, so it can’t be ALL THAT BAD! Sleeping in a coffin might be peaceful? The drugged sponge baths photo sessions continue, and okay, maybe it isn’t worth free French fries. The memories of Jasmine’s rocky relationship with her mother haunt her dreams.
Days go by, twelve to be exact, and it is more of the same. Bill offers to let Jasmine out of her room, so she can watch him work. She asks him if he gets freaky with the dead bodies, and he says he doesn’t, but IDK!
Kelvin works with the police and tries to convince them that Jasmine isn’t dead; she has been kidnapped. Which is true, but the police can’t search the funeral parlor without probable cause. But they do it anyway! Jasmine tries to signal for help, but Bill blames the noise on his cat.
Jasmine manages to untie herself and get a scalpel, but when it comes time to stab Bill, she can’t do it. Bill tells her that the day will come when she will want to stay with him. He is the only one who will love her now that she doesn’t have her mother. Well, her mom is there, in the morgue.
Running out of ideas, Jasmine tries to seduce Bill and give him a sponge bath. She is stalling for time because she sees Kelvin on the security cameras. Bill rushes to stop Kelvin and punches him a lot. Then it is back to bathtime. After they are done, she puts him in the coffin for night-night time.
Six Months Later. Jasmine buries her mom in the backyard with Kelvin, whose relation I’m still not sure of. The end!
STRAY Thought
This was zero fun and a weird watch. Just depressing and gross.
