Synopsis (via Lifetime)
.After learning she had a twin who died, Claire starts receiving strange gifts signed with her sister’s name. What seems like a prank soon escalates into disturbing signs that someone is breaking into her home and trying to take control of her life.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Claire receives a notification of an intruder in her house on her security app. She calls the police for help as she creeps downstairs to see what is going on.
Two weeks earlier, we see Claire is a school teacher, and Gina Hiraizumi is her coworker! Love her! Claire is planning her honeymoon with Mark; she doesn’t get out much. Like, of her town. Claire has never left.
Then a mysterious package shows up on Claire’s doorstep with no return address. In the box is an old stuffed animal, a rabbit. Mark assumes it’s one of her second-graders with a schoolboy crush. Claire laughs it off, but is interrupted with an emergency call from her parent. Claire’s grandma fell.
The doctor comes in with bad news. Grandma didn’t make it. They quickly have a funeral, and Julie, another redhead but no relation, shows up. Julie and Claire were best friends growing up. A set of pitiful-looking flowers arrives with a note that reads, “Sorry about grandma.”
Another mysterious package shows up on Claire’s doorstep. It is from the nursing home where her grandmother lived. Inside are old photos and keepsakes. One photo of two redheaded twins fighting over a stuffed animal rabbit. On the back, it says Claire and Anna, Age 3. Who is Anna!?!?
Claire confronts her parents, who are baffled and insist she is just a friend who looks like her. They decide to come clean: Anna was Claire’s twin sister who died when they were young. The parents decided to hide all traces of Anna, and Claire dissociated with her previous memories. All the adults in Claire’s life hid the truth about this; what else could they be hiding?
These packages just keep on coming! Next is a dolly with a note from Anna that reads “I didn’t forget about you!” Since Mark is out of town and her parents are liars, Claire talks to Julie about the strange things going on. Julie tells Claire she looks awful and needs some rest. Okay, Julie, CALM DOWN! (It is so rude when people say you look tired. Like, AND? Are you tucking me in for a nap? STFU!)
Gina Hiraizumi is back, and her hair is impeccable. No teacher has ever had hair this good. She is iconic.
Claire isn’t sleeping and spinning out. She isn’t doing household chores, getting in fights with the neighbor, and going to the police for help. Or is she? Could it be HER TWIN SISTER, ANNA? Mark can’t handle his wife being deceived and storms off to sleep on the couch. The next day, he leaves on a work trip without saying goodbye.
At the hospital, Claire talks to Eric, Robert’s wife (ironically playing a nurse), and asks about her sister’s birth. She tells her to leave the past behind. Clair also runs into a male nurse, Evan, who notices she’s in the hospital and asks questions. Then Eric Robert’s wife is strangled by someone in the backseat of her car, but I suspect it was just an opportunity to show her cool sparkly steering wheel cover.
We are back to the night in question, with the intruder. It was just the neighbor, because he was woken up by a motion-sensor light. The police gaslight Claire, telling her she is dreaming up intruders. They are VERY unsympathetic.
Speaking of the neighbor, Mr. Fenwick, he is the next to go after someone breaks into HIS house and takes him out with a blow to the head. Clearly attempting to frame Claire.
Claire tries to piece things together with Julie… who is redheaded… and the same age as Claire… and they have been best friends since childhood. This seems fairly obvious to me. While looking through more of Grandma’s boxes, they find a child mental hospital, and Claire calls them for information on Anna. They obviously can’t disclose anything.
Claire decides to go to therapy, and honestly, it is long overdue. She tells the therapist that she inadvertently killed her sister while roughhousing, and the sisters never got along. Claire’s parents sent her to the mental hospital, and they helped her forget the whole thing. The therapist is like, “Wow, okay, we are going to need some more sessions.’ He doesn’t survive until the next one.
Mark comes home from his work trip and is surprised to see Claire cooking and in a sexy red dress. Mark is confused by her total attitude shift; she is talking about moving to the city and leaving her parents and Julie behind. That is because Claire isn’t the woman wearing the red dress; she is bound and gagged in the closet.
Yes, Anna is alive and trying to take over her sister’s life. Anna knocks Mark out and has a heart-to-heart with her sister. Anna tells Claire that she pushed her sister down the stairs on purpose and was sent away. Anna is set to take over Claire’s life and has removed anyone who could blow her cover.
The sisters have a brawl, and Claire manages to free herself. She wakes up Mark, and they say, “It’s over!”
Three months later, the summer flies by, and Claire is prepping for a new school year. Mark and Claire are getting married in October and honeymooning in Bali. Anna is convicted of all the murders.
STRAY Thought
The narrative device of having the scene revealed to be Anna’s later was kind of a cop-out. If you are going to do evil twin, just do it.
What was Evan’s deal?!?! So hot, but so unnecessary. I feel like his involvement is on the cutting room floor.
