Synopsis (via Hallmark)

Alana Higman (King) is sure that her family’s lifelong history as Kansas City Chiefs superfans makes them a frontrunner to win the team’s “Fan of the Year” contest. Derrick (Hynes), Director of Fan Engagement, is tasked with evaluating how Alana and her family stack up against the other two finalists. As the pair spends time together, it’s clear there’s a spark between them but when her grandfather’s (Begley Jr.) vintage Chiefs good-luck winter hat goes missing, Alana begins to doubt everything she believed about fate, destiny and even questions her future with Derrick – unless, that is, a little Christmas magic can throw a Hail Mary. Features cameos by Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, Chiefs Players Trey Smith, Mecole Hardman Jr., Clyde Edwards-Helaire and George Karlaftis, Donna Kelce, and Jenna Bush Hager.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Alana is from a long line of Kanas City Chiefs. Her grandparent brought their kids to the Christmas game, and they fell in love. Through the years, Alana and her family have kept the tradition alive. She claims they are the reason why the team has many Superbowl wins, but more on that later.

At the family football team gift show, Alana tells her family they are finalists for Fans of the Year. It includes a tour of the stadium and sideline seats. Alana will have the family tell their story to the Director of Fan engagement. AKA TYLER HYNES, or Derrick in this movie.

Derrick is pretty bad at his job and engaging the community. He doesn’t go out in KC and needs to learn about the locals. He gets his first KC BBQ and is accosted by Alana’s mother and grandmother; they are not-so-subtle matchmakers. Alana is embarrassed, but she invites Derrick to a Light Up the Block event. He comes and helps decorate, and then “It’s Officially Christmas” plays as they light up that block. Derrick is cold, and the family offers him a hat from the shop. Derrick picks a vintage one, but that one has SERIOUS LUCK!

Through a flashback, we learn that the hat must be worn at the Super Bowl due to a Christmas wish Alana’s grandpa wore it over 50 years ago. The hat was sold but then found, and the KC Football team won again. Derrick doesn’t believe in superstition or the story and loses the love of the family just like that. It’s too bad for them; Derrick has been assigned to review them for a Fan of the Year. They don’t even think Derrick is a fan of football, so they tell him to send someone else.

Derrick ingratiates himself with Alana and her family and writes an article about them. They seem to be vibing and even get drunk from some spiked eggnog. Derrick wants to see some Christmas magic for himself, and it starts to snow. Alana gives him a scarf, and they sing Christmas carols and hold hands.

Football talk, Football talk, Football talk. There are a lot of cameos from SPORTZ guys who are going over my head.

They film in an empty stadium, which is pretty neat. They makeout there, obviously.

Alana and Derrick go ice skating, and it looks enjoyable. Then, they get a Christmas cocktail served by Wes Brown.

The family wins the contest and come how CATRICK MAHOMES LOSES?!??! (A travesty.) The cat isn’t the only thing that is lost. The magical hat is lost, too! Alana’s family isn’t upset with her. They tell her that it will turn up when it needs to.

Alana invites Derrick over for Christmas Eve, Eve, Eve, Eve, Eve. He gifts the family the two seats Alana sat in from the old stadium when they first met. The family is very touched.

Derrick and Alana get into an argument about the hat. Hat Hat Hat, we all talking about the hat. Whatever!

Alana doesn’t go with her family to the sidelines and stays outside tailgating. She has a change of heart and gets a ride from the mascot. Derrick takes the family out on the field for the Fan of the Year presentation. (The Green Screen here is atrocious)

Jenna Bush shows up and introduces them. Alana admits to the stadium that she lost the hat, but they don’t need it because they have faith. Jenna Bush thinks she is Oprah. She tells everyone to look under their seats. They all pull out vintage style hats and put them on. Alana and Derrick make out while everyone cheers them on.

Santa (from ER) gives Derrick the hat. Go Chiefs or something.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

This is clearly a love letter to sportz fans, of which I am not. So this wasn’t for me.

Santa is totally the front desk guy from ER.
