Synopsis (via Lifetime)

When a rising young musician is found murdered at the estate of country music legend Abilene Tucker, all evidence points to the scandal-plagued diva. But as her estranged daughter Caroline digs for the truth, she uncovers a web of obsession.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Ty is the best!

Ty Trumbo kicks it off with a shower scene. He walks around shirtless and with a black eye. He is working on a song called “Stephanie.” (Which is going to stick in my head, even though it is terrible.) Someone sneaks up behind him and beats him to death with a guitar.

The murder happens in Country Star’s, Abilene, house, and she is the one who finds the body, which makes her the number one suspect. Police question Abilene with her daughter, Caroline, as they try to piece things together.

Caroline and Abilene share a stalker. He follows Caroline in the woods and is stopped from attacking her by a handsome man named Kyle. His mustache says he’s a good ol’ boy, but his popping out of nowhere to the rescue is suspicious. Kyle is Ty Trumbo’s brother in this movie, and they search the guest house for clues. Finding a box of journals and song lyrics.

House manager, Barbara, is odd and suspicious. Which means she has nothing to do with the murder, but the movie WANTS us to think that she does. Barbara used to be the president of the Abilene fan club, which makes her obsessive.

Caroline goes to talk with a former songwriter/her mother’s ex-husband, to try to get support for her mother. Their breakup makes Hank look suspicious because he didn’t like Abilene’s new himbo. Even exchanging blows, which explains the black eye. Caroline visualizes Hank killing Ty Trumbo, but it doesn’t feel right. Too convenient. Even with all that, bail is denied for Abilene.

Abilene is in jail as a suspect, which seems extreme for a celebrity. Wouldn’t she get special treatment or something? Her fingerprints were the only ones on the murder guitar, which means it couldn’t be a crime of passion, because the killer wore gloves.

At Ty Trumbo’s funeral, Stephanie shows up! She tells Caroline about the brothers before Kyle kicks her out. The brothers had a feud because Stephanie was Kyle’s fiancée, and Ty Trumbo slept with her and wrote a song about her. Kyle admits everything to Caroline, and she knocks him out and calls the police, who arrest him.

With a new suspect, Abilene is released and gets back to making MUSIC, striking while the iron is hot. Abilene claimed she put family before music, but Caroline is pushed aside for a reunion concert with Hank. The work on a song “Hey, Baby!” which has the same number of syllables as “Stephanie.” Caroline recognizes the lyrics and asks Hank if he wrote the song. He says they came from Abilene.

Caroline finds a secret safe and cracks the code. It contains Ty Trumbo’s journal, soaked in blood. Abilene catches her daughter and sicks her cronies on her own daughter. Caroline is horrified that her mother killed and her staff covered it up and framed Kyle. Caroline pretends to be on board, but is planning a public reveal.

The police are invited to Abilene’s comeback concert, and Caroline’s plan unfolds. She gets everyone to confess to their crimes and records it on her mother’s phone instead of her own.

The concert goes well until Caroline makes her not-so-big move, and she shows the police the recording. As Abilene performs, everyone backstage is arrested. It is her swan song because Abilene is arrested as soon as she goes off stage; she is nabbed. (I thought Caroline was going to play the confession through the sound system and publicly shame her mother.)

Caroline and Kyle start dating, and Abilene writes songs in jail. The end!

STRAY Thought

“Stephanie” was a way better song than “Hey Baby.”

Ty Trumbo is a friend of the pod, so I am always rooting for him, and he did not disappoint here. Let’s give him a leading role in a Lifetime Christmas movie.

I loved the, we aren’t going to have one bad guy, it is going to be FIVE!
