Mel is a divorced mother who discovers her new neighbor, Ruth, has abducted children and imprisoned them in her basement. When Mel’s 12-year-old daughter, Abby, goes missing, she must infiltrate Ruth’s home and save her before it’s too late.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts in an orphanage, maybe? Wayward school for girls? This movie is so low-budget and shoddily put together that I fear it might be unwatchable. Absolutely the ugliest shot movie I’ve seen on Lifetime in a long time.
Janine is missing her daughter, and the stress has ruined her marriage to Robert. Janine has to lean on her friends from church, one of whom is kidnapping girls and beating them with her cane. The cane lady is named Ruth.
At a dentist’s office, we meet Melissa and her daughter, Abby. Abby might be kidnapped next? Probably on her walk home. The plucky underscoring here is terrible. Melissa is new to town and going through a divorce. Ruth, their new neighbor, invites herself inside for dinner with the mother-daughter duo. The music is relentless and never-ending. Ruth breaks into the house and watches Abby sleep, so that is sus.
Melissa flirts with a local pharmacist, who drops a lot of exposition. Ruth is the town’s grandmother figure, and everyone loves her. Ruth makes muffins for everyone and lost a daughter herself. Maybe that is why she is kidnapping other people’s daughters?
Abby goes missing and ends up chained in the basement, dressed in Mary Janes and looking like a schoolgirl. Ruth plays a tea party, but it is not fun. Ruth is happy playing schoolmarm. She keeps accidentally calling them Margaret, her dead daughter’s name.
Meanwhile, Ruth helps Melissa search for her daughter, even though she is in her basement. Police find the body of a young girl, and it is NOT Abby. It is another missing girl. Janine’s daughter.
Melissa and the pharmacist, Nick, look for clues and almost make out. Janine tries to share her feelings about her daughter being kidnapped, too. They tie together that they were both up for leadership roles on the homeowners committee at the time of their daughter’s disappearance.
Ruth, stupidly, wears Abby’s necklace, and Melissa notices. That is enough for Melissa to break into Ruth’s house and almost find the basement before she is chloroformed by Ruth and tied to a bed.
They escape and beat her with her own cane (which is brutal), and the police show up to arrest Ruth, who has lost her marbles. Janine’s daughter is alive, and everyone goes back to normal as if nothing happened. The end!
STRAY Thought
I kept waiting for Ruth to throw her can and do a drop kick and yell, “I’M FIFTY! FIVE O!” Ala Molly Shannon’s Sally O’Mally.
