Synopsis (via Lifetime)
A high-profile defense attorney determined to change her image takes on a pro bono case, which soon threatens both her and her family.
Thoughts
Melissa is a prominent shot lawyer who defends sex offenders and rapists. She is no-nonsense, and neither is her daughter her shames her mother for defending guilty men for a paycheck. Mellissa realizes her daughter is right and looks for clients who can change her public image.
Enter two men named Greg and Dennis. According to Greg, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They came across a woman named Brittney, who was raped and murdered. Melissa takes the case! In court, Greg and his friends flirt with Abby, Melissa’s daughter. Greg gets off out on bail and says with his “aunt,” who is really his friend. They hang out with Abby, who starts wearing beanies and leather jackets. (She also starts paying for all their meals.)
Melissa talks to Dennis, who tells his side of the story. He is vague about the details. He is also not consistent with Greg’s story. Melissa starts to think Greg isn’t that innocent. She requestions Dennis about the inconsistencies. Then she brings them to Greg, and he gets angry. This happens twenty times. This is the whole movie, practically.
Abby continues to party with Greg and his friends and starts doing drugs. Greg draws pictures of her, and Abby hides her new relationship with her mother. Somehow they convince her to smuggle drugs to Dennis in prison? The friends record the transfer and use it as blackmail against Melissa. Dennis promises that he didn’t know Abby was Melissa’s daughter and has evidence on video. He tells her where it is in a drug den.
Melissa goes to the drug den and finds the video. It shows Greg killing Brittney. As she watches the video, she gets a call from her daughter’s phone. It is Greg and Abby is staying with him. He demands to have the phone and sends one of his friends to bring Melissa to him.
Abby finds a picture that Greg drew from Brittney and knows that he is a killer. Then she stands behind a door while her mother argues with Greg; Abby disowns her mother while Greg watches gleefully. Greg has Melissa smuggle some drugs into the prison and has connections inside. Greg takes off his bracelet and kills his “aunt.” I’ve lost the thread of this movie.
For some reason, Abby is still in the house and tries to escape from a window. She is grabbed by Greg and pulled back inside. Melissa shows up to save her daughter and tackles him. Melissa stabs him in the stomach.
Then we get a court scene for Dennis. Abby and Melissa watch on. We have no resolution to what happened to Greg or Dennis. Strange. Total waste of time.
Side Note
Minority Report: Molly, Reporter, Police, Guard,
It is a shame Ally Sheedy has come to this. She is a good actress and deserves better material.
