Synopsis (via Lifetime)
“Whitney” chronicles the headline-making relationship between the iconic singer, actress, producer, and model Whitney Houston and singer and songwriter Bobby Brown from the time they first met at the very height of their celebrity to their courtship and tumultuous marriage.
Thoughts
The movie begins with Whitney heading to the third soul train awards. She meets Bobby Brown after seeing him perform “Every Little Step” while showing his abs and humping the floor. They bond over hating award shows, and he asks her out on a date. Then it is Whitney’s turn to take the stage where she sings “The Greatest Love of All.” (Yaya makes her best attempt at lip-synching.) For their date, they go shopping, and Whitney invites him to her 26th birthday.
At the party, Whitney is surrounded by her friends and family. Bobby Brown shows up, and she gives him the grand tour, including her room of gold records. Then she offers him some cocaine so casually. He refuses and wants to talk about music and how beautiful she is.
Whitney goes to the record label to talk about her next album with Clive Davis. She busts out the coke in the meeting, and he tells her to put it away. They decided to set her up with producers LA Reid and Babyface. (Who happened to work on Bobby’s album.)
Oh my, a sex scene happens, and it really goes there for Lifetime. Bobby and Whitney are officially a couple now, despite rumors about her dating Eddie Murphy. Bobby is jealous of the rumor and tells Whitney he can have any girl he wants. They get into an argument when she asks him to keep things casual, but he says he loves her and storms off.
In the recording studio, Whitney lays down vocals with Babyface and asks him about Bobby Brown. They hook up again. This time we see some man buttcrack. (Sexy?)
Whitney tells her family about her relationship with Bobby Brown and shares that she is pregnant. Her mother does not approve and thinks he is from the ghetto and not good enough for her daughter because he has children from previous relationships. When Whitney suffers a miscarriage while filming The Bodyguard, she is devastated, and the only person who can comfort her is Bobby Brown. He cancels his tour to be with her while she finishes filming.
An extravagant wedding happens, then they have Bobbi Kristina and agree to stay home and be parents for a while. Whitney tells Clive Owen that she will not be touring for two years. Clive sets up a meeting with Bobby Brown to team up with him and convince Whitney to tour. Bobby goes to the bar to down some vodka and then talks Whitney into hitting the road. They both keep doing coke to keep up with the demanding schedule.
Tour montage happens set to “I’m Every Woman.”
The two-party late into the nights, and smoke crack in the mornings. Bobby begins to feel like he is Mr. Houston and leaves before the tour is finished to work on his next album. He ends up drinking and partying instead. Whitney catches him cheating on her. She kicks him out of her house.
Booby continues to party and gets into a fight at the club that ends in gunshots. He calls Whitney for help and then goes into rehab. He shares about Whitney’s crack habit in the rehab center, and it leaks to the press.
The movie ends with Whitney’s rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” Bobby Brown watches from the wings.
Side Note
Minority Report: The cast is made up of mostly Black actors.
The movie focused more on Bobby and less on Whitney.
