Synopsis (via Hallmark)
Angie is determined to spend Christmas alone, but her usual commuter ride turns into a Christmas train that drops her off in her hometown in 2011.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Angie is an overworked spinal surgeon whose mother is Lia Thompson. Angie has missed the last two Christmases because her parents recently divorced. Instead of going home for the holidays, Angie gets drinks with her co-worker Sabrina. They drink Christmas Cocktails and talk about a past relationship. Angie dated a popular sports commentator named Tyler Grant. He proposed to her at Christmas, but Angie turned him down. Even so, Angie remembers it as the last good Christmas with her family.
While the girlfriends are stalking Tyler on Instagram, Ben Lee (a childhood friend) shows up at the bar. He asks Angie about her sister Kristen and her adoption. Angie knows nothing about it because she doesn’t talk to her family.
On her way home to Yonkers, Angie is summoned by a kooky ticket agent. (Christopher Lloyd.) He talks to her about the magic of Christmas and books her round-trip on the 10:15 p.m. train. He asks her to slow down and appreciate the world around her. Angie rushes on the train and promptly falls asleep.
When Angie wakes up, the train is decorated, and Tyler Grant is there. He talks about how excited he is to meet her parents. Angie kisses him to make sure he is real and then rushes off. Christopher Lloyd is in another cart, and she asks him what the hell is going on. Her cell phone is old, and when she calls her hospital, they’ve never heard of her. Angie tries to give Christopher Lloyd her ticket to go back, but half of it is missing.
Angie realizes that it is 2011, and she is heading to her hometown for the last “good” Christmas she remembers. She convinces herself that it must be a dream. Her father, George, picks them up from the train station and takes her home to her happy family and Christmas traditions.
While running errands, Angie takes her nephew to visit Santa; Ben plays Santa, and Angie sits on his lap. Tyler Grant is jealous. Next, they pick out a Christmas tree and run into Chloe, who is a nervous talker. (No clue what she was rambling on about.)
Angie is surprised to wake up the next day and find she is still in town. She tries to take the train home, but the ticket is still half blank. Angie is looking for signs, and Ben Lee is the first person she runs into. She decides to tell him about the strange things happening to her, like her being from the future. He doesn’t believe her, but he humors her. Angie decides to prove it to him and tells him he will choke on a gumdrop while they decorate gingerbread houses later.
Well, THAT HAPPENS, and Angie gloats before saving Ben Lee. He believes her and is surprised when she tells him about Tyler proposing. Ben thought he and Angie would end up together. It doesn’t matter because Tyler doesn’t propose like he did last time.
Angie pays closer attention the second time around and notices that her father and mother are distant. She also overhears Kristen and her husband Peter having trouble conceiving a child through IVF.
To make Tyler feel less threatened by Ben Lee, Angie sets Ben up with Chloe. (Chloe is more than happy to have a fake boyfriend!) It works because Tyler Grant proposes in front of her whole family under a decorated gazebo. (Ummm, my dream proposal? Minus the audience, I’d be subconscious) He then asks her to come to Barcelona with him, and Angie remembers that work is his passion, not hers.
Angie uses her future knowledge to try and re-spark some romance between them. She puts her mother in the dress she wore 35 years ago and orchestrates a reenactment of their first meeting at Aunt Mert’s annual Christmas party. The tactic seems to work, and her parents seem to be reconnecting.
It is Christmas Eve, and Angie is still stuck in 2011. She breaks it off with Tyler, and he takes it surprisingly well! Ben Lee said something about Frosty, and Angie thinks that might have something to do with why she is still in the past.
Kristin gives Angie a note she found in the Frosty jewelry box on her nightstand at the Christmas Tree lighting. The note is a love letter from Ben; Angie realizes that she loves Ben and always has. That realization fills her ticket back to the future…
The train departs, and Angie calls Ben to arrange a meeting 10 years in the future. Ben rushes to the train to stop her, but he doesn’t make it in time.
2021, her family is all still together, and she has a new niece! Angie rushes into surgery and realizes that she has plans she made 10 years ago with Ben Lee. He is there even though she is an hour or two late. They kiss in the restaurant that is trying to close; she starts to remember her life with Ben. He proposes with the Frosty box, and she says yes!!!
Christopher Lloyd ends the movie with a wink. As it should be!
