Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Audrey goes to meet her husband Xander and his family in his hometown only to learn of the sudden death of Xander’s father. After a series of mysterious events, Audrey begins to suspect that there may be more to her father-in-law’s death than a simple accident, and Xander’s sexy, seductress of a stepmother, Marelena, may hold the key. Stars Brianna Cohen, Tim Shelburne, and Kylie Delre (2023).
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
A housekeeper delivers towels to the lady of the house in the middle of the night, Mrs. Whitfeild, but she is DEAD IN THE BATHTUB. Xander, the son, can call 911 to help his mother.
Grown-up Xander talks to his wife on his way to the family estate for a family meeting.
Marlena, Xander’s stepmother, welcomes him home and is shady AF. She insults her daughter Nicole’s outfit and seems generally annoyed with everyone. Nicole has given up on her mother and understanding her.
Oh dang, Marlena is hooking up with the gardener, Sonny. He films them having sex and will most likely use it for blackmail purposes at some point. (Oh no, actually, Lionel hired him to spy on his wife.)
Audrey will join him later; she is working on a story because she is a reporter or something. She is nervous to meet the family because they had a shotgun wedding. On her way, she gets a flat tire, and a handsome stranger named Chip helps her change it. Chip is charming until her hears she is married to Xander. Then he hightails it out of there.
At dinner, Lionel, Xander’s father, makes an announcement that he is selling the company. He tells everyone at the table to stand on their own two feet. No one wants to do that.
Chad tells his sister about the run-in with Audrey and how she is a part of the Whitfield family. His sister, Brianna, is spiteful towards the family due to a mysterious past! (She used to be engaged with Xander.)
Just as Audrey arrives, Lionel is pushed down the stairs, and he tumbles to his death. It is not the welcome she was anticipating.
It’s a good thing Audrey packed an all-black outfit because they quickly attended Lionel’s funeral. She comforts Xander after the service, and he tells her that he wasn’t close to his father, but he was still his dad and had it coming! (I cannot hear that phrase without thinking of that song from Chicago.)
A lady with glasses, Teresa, tells everyone she will read Lionel’s last wishes the morning after the funeral.
Marlena meets with the house manager, who is her secret mother! Mrs. Rae has kept their relationship a secret so Marlena can inherit Lionel’s fortune. Marlena tells her mother to keep her mouth shut and shares details about their disturbing relationship.
At the reading of the will, we learn that Nicole stands to inherit everything, not her mother. Xander will assist with the estate until Nicole is old enough to handle things independently. This doesn’t go over well with Marlena, and she freaks out on everyone.
A cutie drops off Lionel’s ashes, and Marlena tells him to flush them down the toilet. Then, she hooks up with Sonny in the bushes while her daughter spies on them.
Nicole takes Audrey for a walk and talks about Xander’s last fiance and how she is related to Chip, the man who helped change the flat tire. Nicole also blames her mother for Lionel’s death and accuses her of pushing her husband down the stairs. Then Nicole meets up with Sonny. They have been working together to talk Marlena down and are hooking up, too. She is the one who orchestrated the sex tape and is using it for blackmail. (Ummm, what?!)
Nicole isn’t the only one working on a scheme. Xander and Glasses Lady swapped out the wills and worked Nicole into the deal.
Audrey meets with Chad, and he shows her the town for a story she is writing. She asks Chad about his sister’s relationship with Xander, and he agrees to set up a secret meeting.
Glasses lady’s husband or friend or something is stabbed to death. Oh no! We hardly knew you!
Marlena stops by Xander’s office and tells him that Nicole is not his sister; she is his DAUGHTER! Xander tells Glass Lady, and they decide not to let the secret get out because they want Audrey to invest in the company with her family’s money.
Audrey is busy meeting with Brianna and learning about the failed relationship. She tells Audrey about how abusive and manipulative the family is. Audrey tries to talk to Xander, but he is too busy trying to stop Nicole after the house manager tells him she saw Nicole and that guy who was stabbed talking in a gazebo. He was blackmailing HER! (This is getting repetitive.)
Audrey and Nicole find the body by the gazebo and rush back to the house. Then they hear a gunshot. Marlena shoots Sonny when she finds him planning the murder weapon Nicole gave him in Marlena’s room.
Nicole and Marlena argue the struggle over the gun, and Nicole’s pistol whips her mother. Then she has an extreme close-up villain monologue! Audrey lunges to get the gun, and Nicole shoots her brother/father.
As he dies, Xander tells Nicole that she is his daughter, which is a lot.
One year later, Audrey looked amazing and had a best-selling book based on her experience with the family. Marlena swings by and is still bitchy, but at least she buys a book!
