Synopsis (via Hallmark)

Rachel’s stuck in a time loop, reliving the night of her parents’ Hanukkah party. Can Zach, the “nice boy” Grandma’s trying to set her up with, help her make it to tomorrow?

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts in the 80’s as Rachel recounts how her parents met on the 7th night of Hanukkah. Her mother was a DJ, and her father was an economist. They throw a party at a Jewish Deli, and Rachel is in charge of bringing the jelly doughnuts from Goldbergs.

Rachel starts her day late and gets a call from her mother. Her boyfriend skips out on the party because he is sick. Rachel is annoyed and runs into a man with her boxes of donuts. His name is Zach, and she tries to salvage the donuts before running off. He drops something, and Rachel grabs it before meeting with her family and breaking the news about the donuts and her boyfriend not coming.

Rachel’s family is selling her childhood home, and her parents are excited to move into a condo. Rachel talks to her sister Soshana, who is pregnant and a lesbian! (Her wife’s name is Bex.) Rachel’s Grandma Rose sets Rachel up with a guy, and it is Zach, the run-in guy. She gives him back his Dungeons and Dragons dice.

Everyone lights the candle and then plays dreidel. Rachel almost her cousin with a unique dreidel that Grandma Rose gives her. Just as she is about to win, the curtains catch on fire, jeopardizing the house sale.

Rachel wakes up and realizes she is living the same day OVER! She is very confused and suffering from major Deja Vu. Somehow, she STILL runs into Zach and spills her doughnuts. Rachel screams at him that he dropped his “nerd box.” Rachel tries to tell Sohana what is happening, but no one will listen. She continues to live the same day over and over.

Finally, Rachel tells Zach what is happening because he is such a dork. She explained about Groundhog Day and Palm Springs. When she predicted the fire, Zach believes her and tries to put his number in his phone. That doesn’t work, so she gathers proof to make him believe her the next time.

Zach tells Rachel to look through some old boxes her dad packed up to see if there are any clues to stopping the loop. They find a young adult book she is working on, but Rachel is embarrassed. Zach calls one of his dork friends to get more information. Rachel stocks up on comic books, and they spin Grandma Rose’s dreidel. Then Rachel’s boyfriend calls and leaves a voicemail. She listens to it, and it sounds like 80’s music. Rachel goes to a bar and finds her boyfriend drinking with friends, and he breaks up with her.

After a pep talk from Zach, Rachel tries to tell her boyfriend off, and it doesn’t go as well as she’d hoped. (She tells him he needs to get a pedicure.) They make it past midnight, and Zach offers to get bagels and coffee in the morning. Rachel really hopes he will wake up and remember her.

The loop repeats, and one comic book guy tells her something is wrong with her. She needs to follow her passions. She lets the nerds read her manuscript. They get out red pens and write notes while eating cheese puffs.] Zach loves the book and passes it to Rachel’s cousin for publishing.

Rachel screams at him because she is doomed to repeat the same day and will never be published.

The way out of the time loop becomes clear: it must be the donuts. They decide to skip the train and take a green van. Rachel tries the next day, but Zach doesn’t believe her this time. Eventually, they take a road trip in the van.

Zach helps pick up the donuts and invites a noisy lady in line to join them at the family holiday party. Zach and Rachel kiss on the way, and she is surprised to see her boyfriend at the party. (Even though Rachel broke up with him.) Zach rushes off and is worried that he is a rebound. Rachel tells him she isn’t using him to make her boyfriend jealous.

Grandma Rose talks to Zach and then gives Rachel the Dreidel again. She tells her to SPIN THE DREIDEL.

The loop ends, and Rachel wakes up the next day. Her father tells her that he was in the time loop, and Shoshana also spun the dreidel. They met their soulmate, and Rachel has too.

Rachel tries to talk to Zack at his art show at the elderly home. He tells her that he really likes her, but she is too intense. Rachel puts her dreidel into his box, and he remembers everything. They make out.

Note/Stray Thoughts

Hanukkah Magic? Love that

This movie was very self aware of what it was doing, so that was nice! I think this was the best of the holiday season for sure.
