Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Becca and her husband Tom find the perfect suburban house that seems too good to be true. Shortly after moving in, the couple is woken up by a stranger who claims to be the real owner of the house. The couple’s dream home quickly turns into a nightmare as they are forced to unravel the truth of secrets and lies. Starring Morgan Bradley, Jon Briddell, Ciarra Carter, and Jackée Harry (2024).
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
The movie starts with a creepy POV camera operated by a man and a woman roaming a mansion and taking photos. The woman says, “This will be JUST perfect.” Then, the title card.
Becca and her husband-to-be, Tom, are looking for a home non-stop and are stressed about not finding one. Tom is up for partner and is slightly older than Becca. (Her best friend Annie quickly points this out, which is RUDE!)
Becca finds the mansion listing, and Samantha (Lifetime regular Jamie Bernadette) shows her the place. Becca can’t understand the listing price because the house is so extravagant (it has an ICE BOX!), and she thinks it must be haunted. Samantha laughs and tells Becca that they are only accepting all-cash offers.
Jackée Harry plays Becca’s financial advisor (Becca has a large inheritance.), who wears a yellow suit and loves to use the word “fiduciary.” Then Jackée Harry begs Becca to get a prenup before she marries Tom.
Tom and Becca take another tour of the mansion, and the owner, Riley, is there. They go over the paperwork, and Riley wants the cash immediately. That doesn’t concern the couple who sign on the dotted line. (They are getting a 12-month interest-free mortgage.) They move into the mansion a few days later.
We get a little unpacking montage, which I love because Becca’s outfit is wild. It’s a one-strap overall ensemble with a kerchief that really brings me back to the 90s. The couple goes to bed exhausted after the whole moving thing and is shocked when a man walks in their bedroom and tells the frightened couple that he is the owner. Becca and Tom have been conned.
Becca does her due diligence all after the fact and realizes that Samantha isn’t a listed realtor online and Riley has never been listed as an owner on the property. When Annie hears about what happened, she quickly throws Tom under the bus and encourages Becca to break up with him. (Annie does this in every scene and has an impeccable style.)
MEREDITH THOMAS is on the case!!! She plays a pretty, no-nonsense detective who reassures the couple she will look into the paperwork and get back to them. Becca stops by to check on the case and catches Tom lying. He asks Becca not to go to the police and tells her he has already talked to the detective. Detective Meredith Thomas tells Becca she never saw Tom.
Becca confronts Tom while drinking a glass of wine. (Get it, gurl!) He explains that he has been stressed out with work and doesn’t want a bad reputation when he is about to make a partner. The argument goes back to Becca’s inheritance, which is clearly a sensitive topic for both.
Next, Becca goes to the location on Samantha’s business card and learns that she was never employed there as Samantha. Her real name is Mia.
Tom is PISSED that Becca is not listening to him and says he is annoyed she keeps talking about the 500K they are out for. Becca is flabbergasted and tells him it JUST happened; of course, it is top-of-mind.
Becca breaks into Samantha/Mia’s house and demands to know why. Mia tells Becca that she did it for the money, duh. Then they sit down on a couch with an insane looking throw pillow and talk. Mia asks Becca to let the whole thing go because it could become a lot worse if Becca keeps digging. Becca gives the information she finds to Detective Meredith Thomas.
When Detective Meredith Thomas shows up at Samantha/Mia’s house she finds her murdered. The front window is broken with no fingerprints, but that backdoor has many prints; the prints are Becca’s (There is a useless scene with the crime scene coroner.) Becca is brought in for questioning, and Tom stops the interrogation and demands he get a copy of the tapes.
Tom takes Becca home and pours her some roofied wine. She passes out immediately. Tom is the bad guy and has worked with Ripley, an ex-con Tom represented. Ripley wants money for killing Samantha, and Tom decides to tie up loose ends by killing Ripley and then gruffly saying, “This ones Pro Bono.
When Becca wakes up, Tom breaks up with her heartlessly. She moves out and goes back to Jackée Harry for financial advice that I’m too dumb to understand!
MORE wine is shared; this time, it is roofie free. Annie tries to help Becca piece things together, but they suspect Tom is involved. Becca can’t sleep through the night and casually finds a stun gun. (I’m sure it will come up later!)
Becca visits Tom’s office and talks with the front desk worker. The worker tells Becca that Tom is out but offers to call his wife. Becca shows him a picture of Mia, and he confirms that he saw them together and assumed they were married. Becca also gets the building code and sneaks in later, in the middle of the day, to steal some paperwork. (Some custodians have their own buddy workplace comedy pilot in the middle of the scene.)
The paperwork shows that Tom IS involved. They find Riley’s body.
Detective Meredith Thomas tells Becca that she isn’t a suspect because the killer broke Riley’s hyoid bone, and you’d have to be strong to break that! The money shows up in Riley’s account, and the 500K is in it. Becca can wire transfer the money to her account.
Jackée Harry joins Becca at the bank, and someone watches them from the bushes. (It’s Tom, obviously!)
Tom holds Mia hostage and demands the account number. Becca grabs the stun gun from before and shocks him to hell. Detective Meredith Thomas shows up again, this time just to show off her cute ponytail.
Tom is in jail, leaving Jackée Harry to wrap things up! Jackée Harry tells Becca that she will go after Tom for his assets and get all the money. Becca declines and wants to move on with her life. THE END!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Inspired by “True Events”
It’s still unclear why Tom did all this… and why his age was such a thing?
Speaking of age! Jensen Atwood with a gray beard, and he is still HOT!
