After she blames her mother for a break-up, a teen girl runs away and hitches a ride with a family friend, only to be abducted by him. Now she must fight to survive as her mother fights to find her. Erica Durance, and Eric Hicks (2025).
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts with a hot guy camping in the woods. I’m hoping we are going for a Brokeback Mountain situation, but he finds a body and things get decidedly not sexy. Detectives investigate and find a unique ring on the body. The body, surprisingly, isn’t a Girl Taken, it’s a dude.
Cut to expecting father, Perry, whose family is anxious to meet his pregnant wife, Dani. They are celebrating Rose’s Birthday, and she is Perry’s (maybe) niece. She wants to go camping with a boy named Trevor, but her mother is overprotective. Trevor is kind of a dick anyway because he breaks up with Rose over the phone on her birthday. Rose blames her meddling mother for ruining their relationship. (Or could it be the sudden death of Rose’s father?)
At 5:41 in the morning, Rose sneaks out of the house in her knock-off Chuck Taylors and hitchhikes like it’s the 70s! Perry sees his niece outside acting like a fool, pulls up, and checks to see if she is alright. Rose explains that she wants to see her boyfriend, and Perry offers her a ride. Rose drops her house keys and turns off her location. The drive is awkward, and I’m starting to think Perry is NOT her uncle, and I just assumed. He takes her phone to “call” Dani, but keeps her phone in his pocket.
Dani is pregnant on the front porch when Rose and Perry arrive. She is surprised that Perry brought another girl, because the LAST ONE didn’t cooperate. The cell service is non-existent, and Rose’s phone is dead, but Dani makes coffee with roofies! While Rose is passed out, they go through her backpack and read her diary. They justify that the kidnapping is helping Rose escape her mother, and she will be a great addition to their family to help around the house.
When Rose’s mother wakes up and doesn’t find her daughter in the house, she files a police report and stops at the local cafe, where the owner says she saw Rose trying to hitchhike. She finds the keys and knows something is wrong. Police detectives take too long to do things, so Rose’s mother takes matters into her own hands. She gets Trevor’s address and investigates it herself. It’s a dead end, and Trevor’s dad is scary.
One of the detectives, Marla, works late on the murder case. Her daughter also went missing, but she is not working on Rose’s case… yet!
Rose wakes up and doesn’t seem THAT concerned. Perry and Dani are very welcoming and accommodating. They even make her birthday pancakes with a candle in them and everything. They invite her to stay on the farm, but Rose wants a phone or a charger ASAP. The sheriff calls, and Perry denies seeing Rose after the party.
Detective Marla and Rose’s Mother, finally named ANITA, meet and instantly bond over their missing daughters. The police found a photo of the car that picked up Rose and determined it was a red pickup truck. Marla offers to help with the search and even has coffee with Anita.
Rose realizes she is being kidnapped once she sees Perry on a cellphone outside and notices a stain in her diary. She makes a run for it, but Perry knocks her unconscious and drags her into the horse stables, where he chains her up. Perry tells Rose she needs to learn gratitude; they are trying to care for her. Rose ran away from home for a reason. Perry leaves her a bottle of water and booby traps the exit so she can’t escape. Rose uses a brick to try to break her chains.
Dani brings Rose some lunch and feels bad about the situation Rose is in; after all, Dani is also a taken girl. She just decided to play along. Rose cries about wanting to go home, but Dani is too brainwashed to sympathize with her. The food does not look so great, and it could be poisoned, so Rose aggressively kicks the plate away. Rose does manage to sneak a knife under her knock-off Converse.
Detective Marla learns about someone named Edward Teale from the ring found on the scene and orders a background check. Once she gets the address, she visits the farm where Dani is home alone and refuses to answer the door.
Anita gets a call from Perry, who needs to pick up his tool, and when he stops by, she clocks his red pickup truck. Perry feels that Anita knows too much, and he attacks her in her home. Anita is knocked unconscious but comes to and is determined to find her daughter and stop Perry!
Perry rushes back to the farm to talk to Detective Marla and pretends to be Edward Teale. He shuts down Detective Marla’s questions and rushes her off the property. Perry tells Dani to pack a bag because the detectives are onto them and will be able to figure out Perry’s lie fairly quickly. (Which they do!)
Detective Marla returns to the farm and checks the barn. She notices a fork in a haystack and finds the secret door where Rose calls for help. As Detective Marla is about to get Rose out, Perry knocks her out. The sheriff shows up, and Perry shoots him.
It is left up to Anita; she rushes to save her daughter and is armed with pepper spray of all things. She makes her way to the barn but trips the booby traps signaling her arrival. Rose and Anita work together to overpower Perry, and he is arrested. Perry killed Dani’s father and brainwashed Dani, who was also abused by her father.
Police and EMTs are on the scene. Surprisingly, no one dies! Dani apologizes and wishes they could have been friends.
Rose tells her mom that she is going to State College, and Anita is overjoyed that her daughter is doing anything other than chasing a man around. Then Anita freaks out about being an empty nester and asks Rose about dating apps.
STRAY Thoughts
Overall, your very standard Lifetime Movie fair.
Detective Marla’s daughter was not linked to anything? I thought we were going to learn she had been kidnapped by Perry first.
