Synopsis (via Lifetime)
When Zoe’s sister, Rachel, ends up dead from an apparent suicide, Zoe takes it upon herself to find out the truth. Through Rachel’s diary Zoe is able to follow a trail to a world of nightclubs and the secrets they hold.
Thoughts
The movie begins with close-ups o items found in a bar. Bottles of booze, ashtrays and wine glasses have never been so menacing. A woman runs into the shot and picks up a bottle of rum; she writes a suicide note on a napkin and sets the place on fire with a sparkler like it is the 4th of July. The woman goes up in flames.
Zoe is an English teacher who loves PowerPoint. She gets a call from her mother that her sister Rachel is dead, and Zoe rushes home. It is the first time she has been home in a long time.
Barabra, Zoe and Rachel’s mother, starts hitting the bottle hard. Zoe has a lot of questions and reads the suicide note. Then she goes to her sister’s work and talks to the owner of a shady nightclub in town with “bottle service girls.” He gives Zoe her sister’s thing and says he is sorry for her loss.
Zoe reads her sister’s journal and speaks at her funeral, which is held in the backyard. Richie shows up at the funeral and is kicked out by a hysterical Barbara. Zoe learns from the journal that Richie was sleeping with Rachel and cheating on his wife. He is also a billionaire. Then Zoe and Barbara notice that pages are missing from the diary. They decide to start at the club.
I WISH mother and daughter rolled into the nightclub with wacky outfits; instead, Zoe stakes out the joint from the car, looking very teacher-y. She is not alone; Vincent, a paparazzi/photographer, is parked next to her, taking pictures.
Next, Zoe goes to a man named Lolo’s house. The place is a mess, and he takes photos of girls in a strange room. Zoe gets her flirt on and convinces Lolo to invite her to a party. NOW we get Zoe trying on “sexy” club attire, and she is off to the party. Which isn’t at the club, it is a house party? Zoe dances with other girls and realizes that they are on display for men to buy time with her… if you know what I’m saying.
Zoe decides to get into the club another way. She wants to be hired as a cocktail waitress. When she gets rejected Zoe creates a scene and gets the job from the big boss Percy.
On her first night on the job, Zoe realizes that she will not get close to the VIP area that she needs. She asks around and realizes that she will need to be a bottle girl and get her own clients. Zoe quickly moves up to bottle girl and works Richie’s VIP area. He invites Zoe back to his house party.
Valerie roofies Zoe at the party, and Richie brings her out to the lake and demands to know what she is up to. He tells her not to kick a hornet’s nest, and she makes fun of his metaphor before passing out. He throws Zoe overboard and rows away.
I think Vincent saves Zoe? It is so dark it is hard to tell. She wakes up on the couch in Vincent’s home and sees a serial killer wall about missing girls. Zoe is understandably freaked out, but Vincent tells her that she can trust him.
THEN RACHEL COMES DOWN THE STAIRS! She is alive and staged her death to get out of the terrible situation. Rachel was sleeping with Richie and kept going back. She found out that Richie was going to kill her, and she tore the pages out of her journal and staged her own death. Conveniently, another girl at the party died of an overdose, so Rachel burned her body to pose as hers. (YIKES!)
Zoe and Vince break into Richie’s house to steal Rachel’s phone. Unfortunately, Richie and his cleaning crew get to it before they do and destroys it.
Rachel then goes to the club and runs into Valerie, who makes her a roofie cocktail. Rachel switches the glasses taking Valerie out. Then she goes up to tell Percy about what is going on in her club. Things take a dark turn when shots are fired in the nightclub. (See Pulse Nightclub)
Rachel’s diary has all the evidence they need. Richie, Micky, Valerie, and JoJo are arrested and taken away by the police.
Cut to the women dancing in the club. This time from pure joy, not on display for the male gaze. Love that.
