Synopsis (via Hallmark)
Real estate exec Erika travels to Alaska during Christmas time to acquire a bed and breakfast, only to discover that it’s owned by her ex. While there, she finds herself falling in love with the town, and quite possibly him.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Erika works in Seattle for Ms. Vivica A Fox, who would be the best boss EVER! (In this movie, however, she is demanding but still fabulous!) Ms. Vivica A Fox has a particular assignment to visit an Inn in Garland, Alaska, and purchase it for the company to use as a winter resort.
The Alaskan Inn is run by Andy, who has been working on restoring the cozy inn. He even installed an observatory, so kids could see Santa’s flight path. We get an “old people not knowing how to use tech” scene when Andy calls his dad, who might be Santa. (Eats a lot of cookies and all that.) Andy doesn’t get a chance to mention that he is behind on a lot of bills.
Erika has dinner with her chef friend (the best kind), Stephanie. Ericka has a history with Andy and used to date him. Since Erika is single and in need of a promotion, Stephanie encourages Erika to take a flight and Inn room offered by Claire. (A festive lawyer.) Mr. Holliday calls his son, Andy, to tell him about the guest and puts his support behind selling the inn so Andy can take over the family business.
The townspeople of Garland LOVE Christmas and hint that the town may be where Santa’s workshop is. Erika is city girl out of water with her unsensible boots and felt pink peacoat. When Erika sees Andy, he is surprised to see her. Andy is reluctant to sell but considers the offer because Erika is a former friend. He takes her to an Inn room, which is surprisingly basic, with Christmas decorations.
There is, of course, no coffee shop within 30 miles of the city, so Erika and Andy go to Hattie’s diner. They don’t have city things like SALAD and COLD PRESSED JUICES, but they do have a QR code on the menu. (So that is something.) Later, Hattie makes Pork Belly marinated in eggnog to try and appeal to Erika’s sensibilities.
Erika isn’t your typical Hallmark protagonist coming into town to buy the inn. She is charming and interested in the well-being of the inn. Erika makes good recommendations on how to improve the inn’s capacity. Andy doesn’t hear them and takes them as insults. Erika makes him dinner and sits Andy down to give him a real offer. It is a lot of money. Andy checks in with his dad and tells him that he is seriously considering the offer because it would be responsible not to! (Which is vaild.)
Andy takes Erika to the observatory, and they look at the stars through a large telescope. They kiss under the stars, and a shooting star goes by as they do!
Ms. Vivica A Fox calls and checks in with Erika, looking flawless. Erika talks with Andy, and he admits the inn isn’t doing well and feels like a failure. Erika is struck with inspiration and talks about marketing the inn as a part of Garland and SEO.
A montage happens that includes planning Christmas events and the inn receiving more holiday press. There is also a surprise cafe added to the inn! Erika can finally get her cappuccino.
It is time for the Christmas Eve Mixer at the inn, which brings the whole town to celebrate. Erika shows up looking gorgeous in a simple red dress. The event goes really well, and Andy joins Erika by an outside bonfire. Andy tells Erika that he doesn’t want to do all of this without her. Erika doesn’t want Andy to give up something he loves so she can get something she wants. Like The Gift of the Magi. (Not following!)
Erika suddenly checks out of the inn and returns to Seattle, leaving Andy upset on Christmas eve eve! Before her flight, Erika stops at Andy’s mother’s house and calls Stephanie. (Who gives good best friend advice.) Andy’s mom fills Erika in on the whole “family business” thing.
The following morning, Erika sends a letter to Santa with her Christmas wish. (It also looks like she is talking to a mailbox, so it could be mailbox magic.)
Andy has a conversation with Santa, I mean his father, about the family business. He doesn’t want to take over the “shipping company” and suggests his cousin Joy take over so he can run the inn.
Erika doesn’t leave town and returns to the inn for Christmas eve. Where they do a secret Santa gift exchange. Andy and Erika get one another and go by the bonfire. Andy names a star after Erika, which means a lot to her. Erika gives Andy the gift of HER LOVE. Erika quits her job and decides to stay and help run the inn with Andy. They have a second chance and agree to make up for lost time. They make out while Santa and his sleigh jingle jangle by. Ho Ho Ho!
Side Note
Wait, do they really put a Christmas tree on the space needle?
Pretty sure I need to stick a large bow on my computer this year as part of my decorating plan.
