Synopsis (via Hallmark)
When former pastry school rivals Julian (Mitchell) and Brianna (Luckett) meet years later in a TV baking competition, the sparks — and the flour — fly! Each has their own plans for the winning prize money, but only one can win… unless they work together. While Brianna struggles to support her daughter Willow (Naomi Sogbein) and Julian longs to escape his mother’s shadow, they learn that collaboration can create a new recipe for success — and love.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Brianna is divorced, a pastry chef running a food truck in Philly, and NOT destiny’s child! (I guarantee the Christmas song playing is a LeToya Nicole Luckett original!) Brianna listens to the radio and hears about a TV baking competition. (Her lesbian friends tell her to sign up later.) The grand prize is $50.000!
SNL alum Finesse Mitchell plays Julian, who works for his mom, Aunt Sophie. (She is too reputable for the contest!) Julian is ready to sign up and show the world what he’s got!
At the casting event, Brianna is late, runs in, and trips, and her vegan/gluten-free cake (Her daughter, Willow, has diabetes) goes flying and falls on top of Julian’s tart. The mixed flavors pair well together. Julian and Brianna bicker about the mishap and are classmates from culinary school. (They also had a one-night stand, so the sexual tension is brewing.)
Willow gets into an expensive but reputable school, and Brianna realizes she needs to win the competition to make her daughter’s dreams come true.
We meet some other chefs that will be cast on the show; Kandie Kakes is a sexy Instagram baker who drops frosting on her boobs.
The competition is underway, and Brianna and Julian argue while baking. He accidentally gives her salt instead of sugar, and they fight over the mistake while the host records the interaction and posts it on his social media. The clip goes viral.
Brianna and Julian bake a dulce de leche cake for Layne Cheryl’s engagement party and flashback to when they hooked up IN THE KITCHEN AT COOKING SCHOOL! They come up with an idea to pair whiskey with cake and make a winning dish on the show. They celebrate, but the party is short-lived because Willow’s baby daddy shows up.
Brianna tells him about Willow’s tuition, and he agrees to help pay for it with his touring gigs. Brianna reluctantly lets him stay with her while she is in town. He tells her that he loves her, and she asks him to be there for his daughter.
Julian goes to dinner with Kandi Kakes, and people send pictures to production. Rumors start showing up online that they are dating. His mother also has ALS and tells him she regrets dedicating her whole life to baking because now she has no one to share it with. She also encourages him to pursue Brianna.
Kandi Kakes rigs the competition by arranging to be in the finals and creating drama. When it is brought to light that the host and Kandi are working together, Brianna and Julian quit the show.
Willow’s dad comes through with the tuition money by advancing the tour money, so it doesn’t matter that Brianna quit the show anymore.
Brianna tracks down Julian. She tells him that she has a Christmas gift for him. It is a nationwide distribution for his baked goods. (Which is an insane present.) They makeout.
The movie continues, and we learn the show’s host is fired from the network. Brianna and Julian will be hosting their own show!
