Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Secrets of a Marine’s Wife is based on the true story of 19-year-old Erin Corwin (Sadie Calvano), who was married to U.S. Marine Corporal Jon Corwin (Evan Roderick) and expecting her first child, when she suddenly went missing. Erin’s disappearance sparked a grueling search led by family, friends and local law enforcement in the extreme conditions of the Joshua Tree National Park until her body was found two months later at the bottom of an abandoned mineshaft. Suspicions mounted quickly in the tight knit Marine community, and residents began to wonder if the killer was one of their own. In their investigation, detectives uncover a friendship turned illicit relationship between Erin and her neighbor, Marine Christopher Lee (Tom Stevens), which consumed them both and called into question the paternity of Erin’s baby. Was this a motive for murder? Who was responsible? Investigators work to discover answers to these questions and to unmask who killed Erin Corwin. (2021)
Thoughts
The movie begins with the disappearance of Erin Corwin and the police questioning her husband, Jon. He caps the events.
Two years earlier in Tennesse, Jon asks Erin’s parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage. The parents seem hesitant, and Erin runs downstairs before they can answer. The couple rushes off to Vegas to get hitched. Erin’s mother warns her daughter that marriage is work and not all love and butterflies.
Erin and Jon move into a California base and meet more Marine families. The men drive out to the desert and shoot things while the women and kids hang out at the pool. The testosterone in the community is out of control. Erin quickly learns that she is pregnant and shares the news with her family and, of course, Jon. She quickly miscarriages, and that puts a strain on the relationship. Jon starts policing Erin’s spending.
While out for a walk, Erin is offered a ride from a fellow marine named Chris. (He seems to be having relationship problems too. Chris takes Erin to a horse rescue place after learning she loves horses. Later during a Walking Dead party, Chris and Erin kiss while playing video games. They start texting and meet up at the park and kiss some more. They are even almost caught flirting in the stables. Erin’s friend from home reminds her that she is married. After a party, they are full-on caught hooking up by Conor’s wife, Ashley. She has a heart-to-heart with Erin and tells her to go back to her husband and promises not to tell.
Erin and Chris continue to have a relationship. They hook up in his car, and he leaves her love notes. She vents to her friend back home, who starts to encourage Erin to follow her heart.
Chris’s wife starts, Nicole, to suspect something is going with Chris and Erin. She sees them splashing together in the pool and spending more time away from the group at parties. Nicole breaks into Chris’s phone and finds messages with Erin. They get into a huge argument, and Erin can hear through the walls. She knows she is caught.
Chris tells Erin that he had fun, but the relationship has got to end. She is heartbroken, and Jon is there to pick up the pieces. He takes her home to her family and cares for her. The man has no idea about her infidelity with Chris.
When they get back, Nicole confronts Erin and creates a scene. She tells Jon about the affair in front of everyone loudly and calls Erin a “Bitch Ass Ho.” (Which is hilarious.) Then Nicole screams that she will kill Erin. (Which is not hilarious.)
With her world shattered, Erin cries and is a mess. Jon asks if it is true, and Erin can only say that she is sorry. Jon doesn’t yell at her and tries to continue with their marriage. He doesn’t want to talk about it and just move on. Erin can’t let it go and places her guilt onto Jon.
Chris and Jon come to an understanding. Even though Erin still sees Chris secretly. I do not understand what she is thinking. Erin learns that she is pregnant, and you have to wonder if the baby is Jon or Chris.
Jon is excited to have the baby. The morning of Erin’s disappearance, he sees her off in the morning as she goes to find hiking trails to take her mother on. Jon frantically texts and calls her friends and family when Erin doesn’t come home. He calls 911 to report his wife missing.
The Detective question Jon and think it is suspicious that Jon didn’t call them until 24 hours. When they question Chris and Nicole, they have nothing to say, which is fishy to ME!
The search is on for Erin, and Detectives learn about Chris and Erin’s affair. Jessie, Erin’s friend from home, REALLY spills the tea. The relationship never ended, and the baby is Chris’s baby. Erin told Chris that she wants to leave Jon and be with him and their new baby.
With the new information, the detectives bring in Jon again and accuse him of taking Erin to the desert and killing her out of jealousy when he found out she was still sleeping with Chris. Jon maintains his innocence and takes a polygraph.
Then detectives find a second pair of tire tracks at the scene, and they match Chris’s jeep. The detectives question Chris and Connor and learn that Chris is obsessed with the old mineshafts. The police search the tunnels with a robot drone thing. They find animal bones but no Erin. The search continues, and they find Erin’s body on the last day of the search.
Christopher Lee is arrested for first-degree murder during a traffic stop where he thinks he is being pulled over for SPEEDING. Umm no, dude, you murdered someone.
The movie flashes back to Erin meeting Chris in the middle of the desert. He walks her out, asks her to close her eyes, and strangles her. Then he dumps the body in a mineshaft. He also threw a propane tank and gasoline down the mineshaft to cover the evidence, but he was a lousy shot and missed his target.
Chris maintains that he performed a crime of passion at the court proceedings and claims it was not premeditated. He was found guilty and is serving life in prison.
Jon cries at Erin’s memorial and tells her that he wished he told her he loved her more. Wow. That is sad.
Side Note
Minority Report: Detective Cathy,
I like that the family was involved in this production.
Best line of the movie. “We don’t care who you do the macarena with.” (Detective Cathy to Chris)
