Recap/Wine Thoughts
*** DEAD ANIMAL ALERT****
The movie begins in NYX, which is decidedly NOT paradise. Redheaded Tyler brings flowers to an apartment and is surprised to see that Olivia has skipped town to work remotely on a small island called Mo’rorea. (In French Polynesia.) A nosey neighbor gives Tyler all the information about Olivia. When the neighbor starts to get suspicious, Tyler kills her. Then he tells his sister, Allison, that he is going to the island with his “girlfriend” Olivia. Tyler is an obsessive, stalker, killer, redhead.
Cut to a beautiful island, seriously! So nice. The resort event has little huts on the water. Olivia and Dawson are housesitting for a friend. They spend time riding ATVs and filming everything with their cameras. Olivia’s mother is needy AF and asks her daughter for money; Dawson disapproves of Olivia’s mother’s dependency.
More scenic shots of the resort and beach happen. Olivia gets a tour of the grounds with the general manager, Laura. Olivia and Dawson are hoping to film a promotional video for the resort, and I’m booking my next vacation while I’m watching this movie.
Tyle makes it to the resort and, surprisingly, isn’t already sunburned. He watches some videos of Olivia and then makes friends with Dawson. Olivia is paired up with Tyler while riding on some jet skis for promo footage. She has no idea that he is stalking her. The two make small talk while on the water. Tyler gets angry when the shoot ends and bangs on the steering wheel of his car before following the couple to the home they are house sitting. He watches them make out and then throws a rock through the window. Tyler is jealous!!!!
Olivia’s mother continues to calls and begs for money. Olivia is heartbroken that her mother is manipulating her. Laura gives Olivia a pep talk, which is nice. Dawson has to leave the housesitting gig for another job, leaving Olivia all alone.
At night, Tyler watches Olivia while she sleeps. He also watches her in the shower, which is creepier? I’m not sure! Then he follows Olivia around town while wearing a black cap and sunglasses while obviously taking pictures of her.
Tyler continues to do creepy things, like lay in Olivia’s bed, steal hair from her hairbrush, and KILL THE NEIGHBORS DOG?!?! (Let’s not do this again, Lifetime.) Olivia finds the body, and we even get a shot of the dead dog being swarmed by flies. The police finally take Olivia seriously and recommend she stay somewhere else, like Tyler’s resort!
At the hotel bar, Olivia “runs into” Tyler and tells him about all the strange things going on. He lends a sympathetic ear but then goes to his room and prints out pictures of Olivia for his serial killer wall.
Tyler hires a townie to wear the sunglasses and hat so he can take the fall for being Olivia’s stalker. Tyler even goes to “save” Laura and Olivia when they are attacked to take any suspicion off of him. After the staged attack, Tyler beats the crap out of the townie, killing him? The police are perplexed and useless.
Olivia finally stands up to her mother. This side storyline is dumb. The mother says, “Spending money like water” What does that EVEN MEAN?!?!?!
Dawson returns, much to Tyler’s disappointment. He tries to get Olivia alone, but she turns him down because she is going to help Dawson with another shoot on a boat snorkeling. Tyler comes along. (Cue lots of snorkeling footage.) Tyler sneaks up on Dawson as he is changing a camera battery and violently attacks him. Tyler throws his body into the ocean, but Dawson floats to the top of the water somehow. Dawson is admitted into the hospital with a concussion. (The doctors find it strange that Dawson suffered from multiple blows to the head.)
Tyler tries to smother Dawson with a pillow and is caught by Laura and Olivia. He laughs it off and says he was just making Dawson more comfortable. Laura is onto Tyler, and that means she is next to get whacked. Laura uses her manager key to break into Tyler’s room and sees his serial killer wall. She is horrified and tries to call Olivia to warn her, but it is too late.
Olivia finds a picture of her on Tyler’s phone and accuses him of hurting Tyler. Tyler grabs Olivia and chokes her out. Then he drags Olivia out to a sailboat. When she awakens, Olivia is terrified. Tyler explains that he has been following Olivia from New York. She pushes him away and runs around the boat like Jennifer Love Hewit in I Know What You Did Last Summer. Olivia pulls a knife on Tyler and tells him to think about what he is doing. She tells him that there is no relationship, and he made it all up in his head. He overpowers her easily. Wellllllll, until she knees him in the balls and calls for help. Since it is the island police, it takes way longer than it should.
Tyler is back up, slowly chasing Olivia on the deck of the boat. She slashes him with a knife and is saved. Dawson shows up, and they talk about paradise or something. It isn’t quite the title of the movie that would have made it all worth it.
Side Note
Minority Report: Angel, Cleaning Lady, Grocery Store Clerk, Shady Guy, Doctor,
I could have done with MORE shirtless Dawson, so under underutilized.
