Synopsis (via Lifetime)
While visiting her family during Christmastime, Annie Blake (Flood) decides to help three stray dogs get adopted before heading back into her career working for a global nonprofit. But when she runs into local veterinarian Dylan Hawkes (Simat), her old high school debate partner, they team up to save an animal rescue. Ultimately, Annie discovers that finding love, and making a difference in the world, can happen right at home.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Annie works for a non-profit, and she is back in North Haven for Christmas. Her family is VERY into Christmas. Her cab driver, Phil, drops her off and is very chatty on the way from the airport. Annie’s family takes ugly Christmas sweaters to the next level; see the light-up “Ho, Ho, Ho” sweater. They literally smother Annie with love and hugs. Her Aunt Claire wants her to settle down and find a man in New Haven.
At the animal shelter rescue, a man stands outside crying in a Santa hat. He had to close the shelter and donate all the animals to the town vet. Annie rushes to the vet to see if she can help. Dylan Hawkes is the town vet and a former debate team rival of Annie’s. Annie wants to foster a dog but notices that Dylan is overwhelmed. She takes three dogs and plans to help get them adopted.
Aunt Claire insists that she is not allergic to the dogs, but she obviously is. Annie works on matching dogs with potential owners and gives helpful dog training tips. While she matches dogs, Annie and Dylan continue to run into one another and argue.
Annie’s sister Remy thinks that Annie is avoiding her family. Annie admits she isn’t ready to see her father without her mother. (Who died three years ago.) Annie hasn’t been home in three years because she is avoiding a lot of emotional pain.
Annie goes shopping with her father, who doesn’t really understand her. He wants to get her a gift, but she would rather him donate to needy animals. When he starts talking about her mother, she cries and runs off to walk the dogs.
Annie runs into Dylan on the walk, who helps her walk the dogs. They discuss training dogs by the book OR going by instinct. He also mentions needing help adopting a cat and a turtle. The county calls Dylan and wants to shut him down because he doesn’t have a permit to hold many animals in his vet hospital.
Annie and Dylan go to the animal shelter to see how bad it is, and the place is a mess. The county should have been calling Gary’s ass. How was that an operating animal shelter? Annie determines that raising about $10,000 to rehab the barn is up to code. They decide to host a charity Christmas event and brainstorm while at the town tree lighting. They land on Santa Paws.
Cleaning the barn montage happens, including all of the dogs and Annie’s family. Claire brings her spare decorations, and Gary is impressed with her extensive supply. Gary and Claire are totally going to get together. (The decorations end up looking pretty crafty and not cute)
Dylan, Annie, and the dogs go Christmas tree shopping for the barn. Annie is getting attached to the dogs, but she can’t have them because she travels too much for work. Dylan asks how Annie got into Non-Profits, and she contributes it to her mother. Dylan kisses her at the end of the night, and Annie is smitten.
The following day, a winter storm knocks out New Haven’s power. Annie and Dylan rush to the vet clinic to bundle the animals in blankets. Then they make a plan to heat up the barn and keep the Santa Paws Charity event on. They spread the word by flyering a large number of strangers who are inexplicably walking around in a blustery winter storm.
With the generators, they don’t help the elderly or anything like that… they light up Christmas lights! HORRAY! Jake brings his vegan food truck to the event to help, and the town really comes together. (Well, the ones who could make it out in the middle of a blizzard.)
Annie and her father have an emotional moment at the event. He gifts her a rose quartz necklace that her mother used to like.
They raise money to save the shelter, and everyone celebrates. Annie gets a call, and she gets a promotion that I didn’t even know she was up for. Annie will be relocating to Costa Rica for the job.
Gary, who sucks, tells Dylan that Annie got the promotion before she could, and Dylan says he understands but tearily says goodbye. Annie is heartbroken because she hoped he would ask her to stay. Dylan isn’t a mind reader tho, Annie!
Thankfully Aunt Claire sets Annie straight with some good advice. Too bad she is dating loser Gary!!!
Annie decides to keep the dogs and gives Jake a turtle instead of a dog. Stacy gets a hairless car. (Which looks terrifying) Annie decides to stay in town. Her family is thrilled, and so is Dylan.
Dylan tells Annie that she didn’t fill out an application form to adopt the dogs and walks her through a “romantic” verbal application. He tells her his Christmas wish is for her to stay. They kiss while Annie’s family watches from the window.
The movie ends with a shot of a dog tearing into a Christmas stocking! The end!
