Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Before Chrissy Kessler’s (Elliott) meteoric rise to fame, the country music superstar was just a small-town girl with dreams of the big time. Now, with her record sales on a rapid decline, Chrissy is strong-armed by an unrelenting record executive to return to the hometown she left behind to perform a live Christmas concert. Accompanying her on this journey is her longtime supportive assistant Eugene (Pintauro). Luke Covington’s (Quinn) quiet life is suddenly disrupted when he runs into Chrissy, his ex-girlfriend and former country music duo partner, who disappeared on him to pursue her solo career all those years ago. After a tempestuous rainstorm forces the ex-sweethearts to seek shelter in Luke’s ranch home, the two realize that the only way they’ll survive the holidays is with the other’s help.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Crissy Kressler releases an over-produced pop song and is put on the naughty list. (I, on the other hand, LOVE IT!!! REINDEER SLAY! ) Her gay personal assistant, Eugene, tells her it will take a Christmas miracle to turn her career around. Crissy wants to stop chasing trends and be herself. Her music executive couldn’t agree more for her Christmas special. Crissy Kressler: A Hometown Christmas. The only problem is that Chrissy has no friends or family left in her hometown.

Chrissy agrees to the plan because the label will drop her if she doesn’t. Chrissy and Eugene head to Ceder Pine. Eugene is sad to be spending the holidays with his hot boyfriend. He not so subtly asks about Chrissy’s ex-boyfriend Luke, who lives in the town. She isn’t trying to see Luke because they broke up on Christmas and never spoke again.

Luke works at the town bar with his grandmother, Pearl. They are still grieving the loss of his sister in a terrible accident and have been raising her son, Brandon, ever since. Luke hasn’t been spending time dating because he doesn’t want his nephew to think he is replacing his mother.

Crissy has to pee and runs into the bar and runs right into Luke. They have a long meet cute.Grandmother Pearl and Eugene make sassy remarks while the leads oggle each other. (It’s as savage as an episode of the Golden Girls, I love the writing here.) Grandmother Pearl continues to drag them and demands that they go on a date.

Luke gets ready for the date, and Brandon is just as sassy. He is excited that his father knows the famous Crissy Kressler.

After filming some content for social media Luke and Crissy sit down for a meal. Luke is rude to her at the start of the meal but realizes that he is being an asshole and apologizes. They start over and laugh over memories of writing songs and touring in dive bars trying to make it big together. Then they talk about Brandon, the nephew, and the tragic accident that happened to his sister. (What the accident was, we may never know!) Chrissy is empathetic and excitedly tells Luke to meet Brandon. Luke gets angry because he didn’t realize that she was in town for work. He especially calls her a fake person.

Chrissy vents to Eugene angrily. He sympathizes and plays devil’s advocate. They decide to get to know the town on a reindeer-decorated bike. Oh wait, never mind, they just walk around the town. Chrissy stops by Luke house and watches him change like a weirdo and falls into a bush.

They two get stuck together because of a thunderstorm and apologize. Chrissy tells him about the trouble with her career and coming up with a song. She asks Luke to write a song with her like old times. Luke is reluctant, and she says she will do whatever he wants. (Which seems kind of sexual!) He agrees on the condition that she sing at Grandma Pearl’s annual Christmas party.

Chrissy meets Brandon and starts giving him a relationship, which is to dance randomly! It works, but not for Brandon, for Chrissy. Luke watches her dance in slow motion in a bad coat. Later, he shows her a box of memories he kept from when they were together. Chrissy is touched and apologizes emotionally for leaving him years ago to chase her dream. He admits to being hurt and says he looks at it from a different lens. He can’t resent his past, because she is his past, and he loves her very much. (Very nice scene!) They slow dance and kiss to a song they wrote years ago.

A montage happens where they write songs and decorate. Luke comes up with nothing, AND the party is canceled because of a winter storm. Chrissy and Luke drink alone at the bar and exchange Christmas gifts, she gives him back a guitar pick of his that she uses to be close to him while she is away.

Luke performs his song for Chrissy, “Sweet 16 on Christmas.” (Which is no Reindeer Slay!!!) Chrissy is touched by the story and the thought he put into it. Brad Love, a famous singer, interrupts the moment. Brad was brought in to boost ratings for the TV special. Luke gets the wrong idea and leaves.

Grandma Pearl gives Luke a proper talking-to, and he realizes that he didn’t even give Chrissy a chance to explain.

Eugene (remember him?) is back, and his boyfriend is in town; that’s to Chrissy’s thoughtfulness. She called his boyfriend and brought him in for the concert. They decide to make a grand gesture to win Luke back. Chrissy recruits Brandon to dance with her on the show.

They move the concert to the bar, so Grandma Pearl’s party can happen also. Then Chrissy and Luke make up, and she asks him to join him on stage. They sing a better arrangement of “Sweet 16 at Christmas.” (Adding it to my playlist.

Could we not get Brooke Elliott a proper popstar wardrobe? Why was she wearing basic
