Synopsis (via Netflix)

Feeling career burnout, pop star Angelina escapes to grant a young fan’s wish in small-town New York, where she not only finds the inspiration to revitalize her career but also a shot at true love.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Angelina is a bi-lingual pop icon who is giving me Nicole Scherzinger vibes. A reporter asks Angelina if she is worried about becoming irrelevant because she is too old and can’t TikTik. Apparently, she isn’t at the top of her game.

Angelina’s manager, Mo, gets a call from the record label and asks her to make a Christmas single, or they will drop her. Mo tells Angelina that she will have to write a new hit single by Christmas.

Freddie Prinze Jr. is in this movie, and my man is looking pretty old. He plays Miguel, who is a man raising his aspiring musician daughter. (Who happens to know how to TikTok! Well, actually, it looks more like Instagram.) The post is a cover of Christina singing an Angelina song in honor of her mother, who passed away. Christina plans to sing it at her quinceanera. She also wishes that she could take a selfie with Angelina one day.

Angelina sees the post one night while she is working on her new song and is touched. (Her mother also passed away, and she hasn’t liked Christmas since.) Angelina forgets about it and is more focused on photoshoots and her publicity relationship with telenovela actor Ricardo.

Barry visits Angelina at her photoshoot and wants to replace her with new pop star Cheri Bibi for the cover. Angelina storms offset with Mo, and they drive around aimlessly. Angelina looks phone and remembers Christina’s Christmas wish. It will be good publicity, so they go to the school.

Miguel works at Christina’s school as the music teacher, so when they are both called to the principal’s office to meet the pop legend. Christina is overjoyed! Then everyone gets snowed in! Oh no! Christina invites them to their house for pozole dinner to wait out the storm.

Christina shows Angelina her bedroom and asks for advice about boys. Angelina shares what it felt like to lose her mother and how devastating it has been for her. Christina relates to Angelina because that is precisely how she feels.

Frida, Christina’s grandmother, welcomes Mo and Angelina to the house. She is already playing matchmaker with her son Miguel and Angelina. Frida doesn’t tolerate Angelina’s diet and forces her to eat pozole like a typical grandmother.

On a house tour, Angelina sees a song on the piano that Miguel is working on. “Home is where the Heart is.” She plunks out a few notes on the piano and sings halfheartedly. They start working on the song, suddenly inspired. Angelina tells him that she needs to write a brand new Christmas song and asks him if they can do it professionally. Miguel agrees and will put the money into Christina’s college fund.

Christina has a rehearsal for her quince, and Angelina is still in writing mode. She decides to come along to continue writing with Miguel. Christina’s friends and tias are very excited to see the pop star. They freak out even more when she gives them choreography notes.

Romantic tamale-making happens.

Miguel takes Angelina to walk through some Christmas lights to clear their heads. Miguel worries that he isn’t a good father, and she assures him he is. They look into one another’s eyes and come up with the song’s final line.

Ricardo shows up at the house after tracking down Angelina on social media. He wants to take her away from her fans and back to their lives. He is also jealous of Miguel. Before she goes, Angelina invites Miguel and Christina to a Christmas charity gala as her VIPs.

Which is pretty much the next scene. The gala is held in a beautiful ballroom, and Christina and Miguel are given formal wear for the event. Angelina wants to premiere the original song for everyone, including Cheri Bibi and Barry. She invites a reluctant Miguel up on stage. They nail the song, and I’m not sure that it is a hit, but we’ve got 30 mins left in the movie, so something big has to happen.

Angelina celebrates with Miguel before being whisked away by reporters Ricardo and Barry. (Who has ditched Cheri Bibi and given Angelina the song on SNL.) THE SATURDAY OF CHRISTINA’S QUINCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miguel tells Angelina that he can’t just uproot his life and go on tour with her. Plus, he wasn’t working on the song for all that; he wanted to spend time with Angelina. He tells her how he feels, but she can’t give up her life for a man.

Angelina breaks up with Ricardo, and Christina has her quince. (Which is Cinderella themed, maybe?) Angelina shows up and impresses everyone, especially Miguel. They kiss and plan to spend Christmas together.

The song goes to number one on the holiday charts. It certainly won’t be on my holiday playlist. YIKES!
