Synopsis (via BET)
BET+ ORIGINAL. A globe-trotting influencer returns home for Christmas and reconnects with her childhood sweetheart as they team up to save their beloved roller rink from foreclosure.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts off in a roller rink where two tweens are learning how to skate together. Deja and Ian skate around the rink with Deja’s mom Celeste giving them advice.
Celeste tragically dies, and Deja has to move to live with her father, who is stationed overseas in Germany. She leaves behind Ian and everything she has ever known. Ian gives her a special key chain so he will always be with her.
Deja grows up traveling the world, and now she loves yoga. She talks to her cousin CC to check-in. CC wants Deja to come home for the holidays for once. She hasn’t been home since her mom died.
Deja has built an extravagant world around her with a handsome British man named Peirce. They make holiday plans, but those plans are put on hold when Deja’s grandma has a heart attack. Deja goes back to take care of her grandmother. CC is overwhelmed with everything and needs help.
At her grandma’s house, Deja is surprised to find her childhood room is the same as she left it. CC says they thought she would come back!
Then they go to the roller rink, where some sick choreography happens. Ian is there too, and happy to reconnect with Deja. She posts a pic on social media, and Pierce calls because he is jealous.
Ian already has a girlfriend who skates with him and wants to blow up on social media with the cool choreography. The problem is, is she into him or his social media clout.
Deja goes to the spin roller rink and returns on her skates for some very shaky cam footage! (This is set to a trap version of the theme song for Requiem for a Dream. Like, WHAT!!) She is having fun with Ian and missing calls from Pierce. Pierce looks up the business and sees they are having financial troubles.
Suddenly he becomes evil AF and calls the owner, and offers to pay off the mortgage. Pierce doesn’t want Deja to have the rink to keep her in town and plans to tear it down and develop condos.
The town comes together to save the rink. Ian uses his social media presence to build interest in donating to the cause. Deja posts on her travel blog about her hometown and why it is good to be back for the holidays.
While working together, Ian realizes that he has always loved Deja. She says she cares about him when he tells her, but she is in a situation. Then CC learns that Ian’s girlfriend is using him for social media.
The final nail in the coffin is when Deja finds out that Pierce is the man behind the condos. He shows up and tries to explain. Needless to say, she breaks it off.
Ian’s parents donate the remaining money to save the rink. Speaking of parents, Deja’s dad shows up too!
Ian and Deja skate at the end and are going to make a go at it! The end!
Side Note
Minority Report: The cast features an all-Black cast.
This movie has very little Christmas activity and was super dark at the beginning.
