Aphrodite was made famous back in the day for performing THE timeless love song of the era. The song that everyone plays at their weddings, in every sappy commercial for diamonds or rings or puppies or soldiers coming home. It made her a ton of money, but Aphrodite HATES this song. She’s now the meanest judge on Pop The Question but her life changes when Brianna, becomes the breakthrough contestant, exuding love and purity. When Aphrodite reluctantly becomes her mentor, she does everything possible to steer her away from love and love anthems and so is visited by three spirits who take Aphrodite on a journey through love (and Christmas) past, present and future to try and shake her out of her funk and let love back in!
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Ashanti plays a DIVA who yells at a fashion designer for making her look like Mrs. Clause. When her Christmas music video plays on the TV, she screams for her reality music show producer/she thinks assistant to turn it off.
On the set of Pop the Question, Ashanti continues to be the worst to Femi, and they bicker. Brianna McKalester and her girlfriend Kyra (who has cancer) come to set to compete and work with Ashanti as her mentor.
During the filming, MEL B IS THE HOST, and Brianna tries to impress Ashanti. She sings the song that Ashanti has been trying to avoid all day. Her voice is okay, and Ashanti is not impressed and walks off-set. The producers tell her that she needs to cooperate, or they will lock her music in the vault and make her irrelevant.
Ashanti gets drunk to ease her nerves and is greeted by three Christmas Diva spirits. Ms. Vivica A Fox, who is giving Jasmine, Eva the Diva, who is obsessed with licking things, and Robin Givens. They want to help Ashanti find compassion, service, and truth. Together they make love. Ashanti tells them to “Get Away from Me.Net”
Then they show Ashanti her future, which is a foggy room. Ashanti tells them that she doesn’t care about Christmas.
Ms. Vivica A Fox, shows Ashanti little her at Christmas. Her mother calls Ashanti selfish and is way harsh. (Think Mommie Dearest level mean without the camp)
Ashanti wakes up in the studio, and her attitude is unchanged. She is still bossy and uncompromising. She blames the weird night on too much wine. Then they visit her in her dressing room and take Ashanti to 2000 where a boy first betrays her. Her friend Femi was by Ashanti’s side to pick her up.
The attitude has not changed, so the spirits take Ashanti to New York circa 2002. Ashanti takes the stage at an open mic and sings for the bar patrons. Everyone stops and listens. (I mean, Ashanti did ghost sing J-Lo’s vocals back in the day.) Then we see Ashanti’s mom being terrible for 10 mins.
The spirits take Ashanti to the night she first met Michael and then their tremulous relationship. She mistreated him because she was pushing away people who loved her. Ashanti doesn’t want to see all this and wants to get back to her life.
Then a burning Christmas tree talks to them, and the spirits are scared. They aren’t angels. They are the D-Team. They go to the last resort to get through to Ashanti.
We go to the future and see Ashanti pawning off her trophies for cash. She sings in a dive bar to no one, and she also sounds terrible. Ashanti is shooketh!
Giving out tough love is not a loving gesture. Ashanti understands that she was showing her love the same way she thought her mother was showing her, but it was abusive.
Back in the present day, Ashanti learns about Kyra’s cancer and the struggles Brianna is going through behind the scenes. Ashanti jumps into action to change her ways.
She recruits her actual assistant, Antonia, and properly calls her name. She invites everyone she knows to the speakeasy where she got her start. Ashanti apologizes to Brianna for trying to change everything about her. Ashanti explains that she wants to do the right thing.
Brianna calls Kyra and begs her to come back to be by her side for the performance and says that she means everything to her.
Ashanti makes a speech about love, and how it isn’t just about what you get from it, it is about giving. She thanks everyone in her life, including Michael and Fatima.
The performance with Brianna and Ashanti goes so well at the speakeasy that they perform it live on the Pop Sensation show. Brianna wins the show, and Kyra gets into a special treatment center.
The snow starts to fall, and thanks to our spirits, Ashanti says publicly that she will be focusing on positivity. Then her mother shows up, and Ashanti tells her to take her ass to therapy. Good for Ashanti!
Ashanti and Michael kiss while the spirits argue over whether or not they should at the end of the movie. Then my DVR cut out! The end!
