The passing of beloved Ms. Marley reunites six estranged friends for one final hometown holiday treasure hunt. As the search unfolds and fond childhood memories are relived, sparks fly between Austin Craig (Frey) and his former best friend Everett Matthews (Massey). The gang find the hidden treasure before the city has the chance to turn the Marley house into a holiday resort, but the blossoming holiday romance between Austin and Everett may turn out to be the greatest Christmastime treasure of all.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins in a mountain town and maybe a summer camp? Then we go to LA and meet Tipper and Austin, business partners and not romantic leads. (Cause this is. GAY Christmas movie! Yay!) They land a big client who is super hot.
Cut to the mountain town, Everett decorates the summer camp/lodge, but his friend Ricky tells him the building is for sale and the land will be developed into a luxury hotel. Everett decides to put on the town Christmas Treasure hunt to remind the town why the site should be a historical landmark.
Ricky, Everette, and other kids who grew up in the town all get letters from the deceased, Mrs. Marley. (It’s like IT at Christmas) PR Maven Michelle, Athlete Clay, LA friends Tipper, and Austin are all called back to play the game.
Austin has one too many buttons unbuttoned back in LA and gets the letter. Tipper and Austin decided to go back because they needed the money to upgrade their business. Everyone returns, actually!
A cute Chicago couple, Clay and Michelle, think it is strange to be back at Mrs. Marley’s place. They speculate about if Austin and Everett have seen one another yet. (The two have a past!)
At the bar, Everett fills the out-of-towners about the sale of the property, his plans to buy it, and revive the Christmas treasure hunt. Austin chugs wine because he can’t handle seeing Everett, they ended on not-great terms, and Austin is still upset about it.
Ricky doesn’t want to participate in the treasure hunt because he works for the city and has proposed the sale to the board already.
The letters all go together and provide clues for the treasure hunt, The whole gang groups up and follows the clues while sharing memories. They find a treasure map on the back of a snow-covered bison painting.
The map leads them to a broken helicopter and then a wine cellar.
During a break, Austin and Everett talk about coming out, and they approach it differently. Austin has been out and proud for as long as he can remember, and it took Everett more time. Austin is surprised that Everett moved back to town and has spent time with his parents. (Everett’s parents are dead.)
Rochelle Raimo wants to sell the property and aggressively brings people for showings. The gang needs more time to solve the puzzle and scare off potential buyers with horror stories of repairs that need to be made.
The search for keys continues, and everyone finds theirs except for Austin. His key is in an old tree fort that Austin and Everett hung out in as boys. Austin’s parents were in on it and helped hide the keys. They don’t know where their treasure is.
Austin and Tipper want their money cut to help the LA business. They find the treasure buried under the house, which is a lot of money in gold. All of the money needs to go to Everett so he can buy back the farm, which is his dream. The boys argue about what they are going to do.
Austin talks to his family about being in love with Everett, but they don’t want the same things in life.
Without Everett, Austin, his family, and friends put on the Christmas Eve Carnival that Everett planned on using to win over the town.
Everett shows up at the party and tells Austin how he came out to his family was telling them that he was in love with Austin. They kiss and promise to kiss every new year from then on because they are best friends.
The land is saved because Everett donates the money to the city in exchange for a historical landmark deal. The end!
Side Note
Minority Report: Austin, Everett, Ricky, Jeannie, Michelle, Clay,
I am not the biggest fan of the treasure hunt thing, but I am glad to see representation. Especially high school lovers who rekindle an old flame.
