Synopsis (via Hallmark)
Ella returns to her hometown to mend fences with her fractured family. With the help of Griffin, her ex-boyfriend, she encourages her family to celebrate Christmas and Kwanzaa and to heal their past wounds before it’s too late.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts at Ella’s work party. She is a graphic designer and plans to open her town design shop. The work party includes loved ones, and everyone has their family in town… except Ella.
Well, she has a family, but they have been fragmented since her grandfather died. Holly Robinson Peete plays Ella’s mother, who is planning to move to Chicago to get away from her mother, Tess, who drives her crazy. The mother and daughter run the town bakery; the holidays are the busiest time of the year.
Ella tries her best to bring her mother and grandma together. They all go Christmas tree shopping together and run into her ex-boyfriend, now mayor, Griffin. (Who is putting on the traditional Christmas events as well as Karamu.) Ella asks Griffin to help bring her family together.
While cleaning some old things, Holly Robinson Peete and Ella find Grandpa’s Kwanzaa chest.
Ella decides to make Kwanzaa cookies with Griffin; they propose cookie-making to Holly Robinson Peete and her mother to make them for the town event. They agree!
To celebrate, Griffin and Ella go out to dinner, where he tells her that he was going to propose before she left for Boston.
On Christmas Eve, Ella and Griffin ask Holly Robinson Peete and Grandma to celebrate Kwanzaa all seven days in memory of Grandpa Riley. Out comes the Kwanzaa chest, and the family sets up the candles.
Day 1 is about unity and family. Then they eat stew
Day 2 is about finding oneself.
Day 3 is giving back to the community.
Day 4 is about purpose. Griffin takes the ladies to grade school, and they remember when they were kids.
I lost count of the days! Eventually, Ella shows her mom and Grandma the video she has from Grandpa Riley. He tells his family they should not go to bed angry and offer forgiveness. Holly Robinson Peete and Tess talk things out. Then they hug while crying. Holly Robinson Peete is still moving to Chicago but on good terms with her family.
It is the last day of Kwanzaa and the year. The mayor hosts a significant event in the town square and invites Tess, Holly Robinson Peete, and Ella to stand with him for a traditional blessing. Everyone dances and plays drums. Then they watch fireworks, which really can apply to any holiday!
Ella thanks Griffin for helping her. Ella decides to open a store in town because her roots are in her hometown. She tells Griffin, and he is happy to hear it. They kiss, and the end!
