Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Amanda Finley will stop at nothing to keep her son Jackson from marrying Olivia, who she believes is after his money.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins at the Finley estate; Amanda is prepping for her son Jackson’s arrival. (Well, actually, she has her housemaid Louise set it everything up!)
Jackson brings home his new fiance’ Olivia, as a surprise. (Because his mother overthinks things?!) Olivia is worried that it is a bad idea, and she is probably right. They met on Zoom and had a short romance in Singapore while working on a project for Jack’s Uncle’s company.
Rachel is Jack’s ex-girlfriend who teaches yoga in the area. She is a successful businesswoman, and so is her mother, Caroline. They gossip over brunch about Jackson being in town with a new woman. It seems everyone knows about Olivia but Amanda.
The introduction goes better than anticipated, even if Amanda is caught totally off guard. Amanda asks the typical questions and silently judges Olivia’s answers. Amanda prefers Rachel over Oliva.
After the initial meeting, Jack reassures Olivia that everything will be fine. Then he leaves her to meet his Uncle Victor at his new office. Victor tells Jack that the surprise was ill-planned. He understands Amanda’s concerns because they worry Olivia is after the family’s wealth. Victor asks his right-hand man, Stan, to look into Olivia.
A PI follows Olivia around town and catches her going on a date with another man. Stan also learns that Olivia may have orchestrated the zoom meeting to try and get closer to Jack. Then someone breaks into her hotel and makes a copy of the files on her phone while she sleeps and taps the phone.
Olivia and Amanda have coffee for some more interrogation. No question if off limits for Amanda, who pries into Olivia’s intentions of working and having a family. (Something Amanda disapproves of.)
Amanda then talks to Caroline about setting Rachel back up with Jack.
Olivia starts to feel that something is off and meets with Jack in the office. Stan helps her to his office and asks more questions. Olivia tells Jack that she thinks a co-worker is stealing money from the company, and they are onto her finding out too much.
The photos of Olivia meeting up with the mysterious man make their way to Amanda, and it confirms her plan to break up the couple and make Rachel happen.
Olivia is attacked in her apartment and almost strangled to death. Amanda finds her future daughter-in-law and calls the paramedics. Olivia is admitted to the hospital, and Jack stays by her side. He starts to suspect his mother might have had something to do with the attack.
Amanda admits to Victor that she hired the PI. The PI learns that the man Olivia was meeting up with is someone named Russel.
In the middle of the night, the black hoodie attacker sneaks into Olivia’s room and doses her IV with a lethal injection. Lucky for Olivia, Nurse Danielle is on top of things and calls a COLD BLUE!
Olivia pulls through and answers questions that detectives ask. She implicates Amanda in the attack due to a silk scarf she sees in the surveillance video. Victor does damage control and tries to discredit Olivia.
When the detective questions Amanda, she admits the scarf is hers. Victor is very involved in this questioning as well and advises Amanda to show Jack the pictures of Olivia meeting up with the mystery man.
The man turns out to be Olivia’s brother, who is an addict. Olivia breaks down to Jack about her parents disowning her brother, and she has been his only caretaker ever since. Jack asks to meet the brother because he is just cool like that. Russ just wants to be in his sister’s life because he has gotten clean and is looking for a job.
Amanda catches Caroline returning a scarf, the same one from the surveillance video. Amanda accuses Caroline of trying to kill Olivia and screams, “ADMIT IT! YOU DID THIS!” Caroline finally does fess up to it as a ploy to get Olivia out of the picture and give Rachel another chance. The women struggle over that scarf, and Caroline eventually goes tumbling down the stairs. (Thanks to Lousie. She cooks, she cleans, she kills!)
Jack rushes to his mother’s side, and she apologizes for doubting his intuition about Olivia. She also apologizes to Olivia, who graciously accepts. They promise to start over.
Uncle Victor shows up to wrap up the business jargon (Which I don’t care about.) Stan was behind the first break-in and was the inside source stealing money or whatever. (Come on, Stan!)
Randomly, Rachel apologizes to Jack and Olivia about her mother’s behavior and promises them that she will be in jail for a looooong time. Then Rachel goes home and kisses pictures that she has on the wall of Jack; she is obsessed with him. (Who wouldn’t be, he is a hunk!)
Side Note
Ending here was little rushed and the Rachel Caroline pay off was underwhelming. Would have loved Olivia to turn out to be the bad guy and Amanda being right with her mother’s intuition.
The location scout on this movie did a great job finding unique and exciting filming locations!
