Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Two moms battle to see which of their overachieving daughters will be accepted to a prestigious university.

Recap/Wine Thoughts.
Inspired by True Events

The movie begins at a small birthday party on a family estate. Lacy and her daughter Nicole sing to an elderly man who makes a wish for his granddaughter to go to a prestigious school called Whittendale. Nicole is a legacy; her great-grandfather and grandfather went there. Nicole’s mother, Lacy, didn’t have the grade to get in and is a forever disappointment in her father’s eyes.

Parker Williams is another student up for admittance into Whittendale and has the same class ranking as Nicole. They are running up against one another for Class President. (Her mother, Mandy, worked in national politics and helps her with her daughter’s campaign.)

Mandy and Lacy were classmates as well. Lacy is still bitter that Mandy took her spot at Wittendale and will do anything to keep history from repeating itself. Mandy is competitive, and her husband cautions her not to get too obsessed. (They moved back to their hometown to reduce Mandy’s stress.)

When Parker wins the election, Lacy demands a recount. (Since Mandy’s campaign for Wisconsin was accused of election fraud.) SPEAKING of election fraud, Lacy stuffs the ballot box with fake votes in favor of Nicole.

The votes are recounted with both mother and daughters watching on. Parker still wins the recount. Nicole is humiliated because it makes her look like a sore loser, and he mom is meddling.

Lacy asks her dad to call the school and put in a good word. He doesn’t want to give Nicole the spot if she doesn’t earn it. Lacy cuts off his oxygen and kills him when he flat-out refuses. Then Lacy practices her 911 call before actually calling. She is totally evil!

Lacy meets with “The Prep Guy” to help her daughter get into Whittendale, and they suggest retaking a standardized test, and maybe a donation of $10,000 wouldn’t hurt.

We get a montage of Nicole studying and doing sit-ups randomly. Nicole misses out on parties and social life for studying.

Lacy has a limited budget but convinces “The Prep Guy” to pull some more strings by offering to sleep with him. (She has no intention of sleeping with him for real.)

Nicole sneaks out of the house the night before the test and goes to a party. She sees Parker and vents about how her mom is the worst. Parker tells Nicole just to have fun and not worry about their mothers.

The next morning, Nicole is hungover and wakes up in Parker’s house. Mandy drives Nicole home, and Lacy accuses Parker of purposely getting Nicole drunk. Mandy is shocked at Lacy’s rudeness.

With Nicole out of commission, Lacy dresses like a teen and pretends to be her daughter!?! (HAHAHA! I love that!) The test proctor is kind of like WTF but lets her in any way. Then he calls “The Prep Guy.” to come check it out, and he takes a picture of Lacy taking the test as blackmail. (He confronts Lacy with the picture and gets his sexy time.)

The CTE scores come back, and “Nicole” gets into the 98%. Lacy is super excited and cheers. Nicole doesn’t want to celebrate because she didn’t earn it. Nicole is embarrassed when the principal announces the scores at school. Parker calls her mom and tells her about the perfect score. They know that something is not right.

Mandy meets with Mr. Prep Guy and is horrified when he propositions her for sex to get her daughter higher scores. Now she REALLY knows what Lacy is up to. (But she has no idea!!!)

Lacy sets up a meeting with Mr. Prep Guy, and she brings a wad of cash AND a meat tenderizer. He tells Lacy about Mandy stopping by and doubting Nicole’s test scores. Mr. Prep Guy tells her he will need more money, and she tries to hit him with the meat tenderizer, but he overpowers her. When Mr. Prep Guy almost rapes Lacy, she knocks him in the face with an iron and kills him?

Desperate to take Mandy and Parker down, Lacy buys drugs and plants them in Parker’s backpack. The school finds the drugs, and Nicole sees Parker dragged to the principal’s office.

Nicole asks her mom about Parker and makes her swear she had nothing to do with it. Nicole tells her mother that she doesn’t want Parker and Mandy to be under any more stress because she learned that Mandy has a heart problem and can’t be under stress.

Mandy talks to the principal and gets so worked up that she has heart pains. When leaving the meeting, Mandy runs into Lacy, who giddily tells her that she doesn’t look so well.

Mandy and Sean have their daughter. Take a drug test and then get security footage from a cafe. Mandy reviews the footage. Detectives find Mandy and question her about Mr. Prep Guy. (Who was found murdered.)

The detectives also question Lacy, who has an answer for everything. Nicole feels uncomfortable because her mother’s alibi is a lie.

An admissions representative from Whittendale meets with Nicole and Parker. It seems more like a meeting for the moms. Nicole admits to the admissions rep that she didn’t take the test. This sends Lacy into a freakout. She causes quite the scene.

Lacy ties Mandy and Parter to some chairs, douses them in gasoline, and holds a lighter over them while yelling about how unfair life is. Mandy passes out from the stress and has heart issues.

Nicole finds her mom and tries to stop her until the police arrive and arrest Lacy. The detectives drag Lacy away while she screams for her daughter. Nicole watches and cries.

Parker gets into Wittendale, and Nicole gets into the stage. Everyone is happy, even Lacy, who is in prison yelling at prisoners while they take standardized tests. (Hey! Good for them!)

Side Note/Stray Thoughts
