Recap/Wine Thoughts
Lindsay Lohan is back with another Netflix Holiday
Movie, we loooooooove that for her!
We learn through a voice-over and some animation that Lindsay Lohan is playing Avery, who fell in love with her childhood friend, Logan. They have been through a lot together, like her mother’s passing, college, and an impending breakup when Avery gets a job in London and Logan drunkenly ruins her surprise going away party by proposing. He isn’t handling the news well, but Avery is ready to take time for herself. She declines his proposal. Then he talks about her dead mother and takes things too far. The year of the going away party is 2014, so we anticipate a time jump to ten years later, AKA the present day.
We get a travel-through-time montage that is very superficial and, of course, features Netflix staples like Squid Game.
Logan is a contractor for a big company and is dating a college girl named Cassie. He is going to her home to meet her family. All her siblings have C names. Logan’s girlfriend doesn’t come in when he visits his mom and grandma, who is struggling with dementia.
Avery is helping her dad move out of their home with her boyfriend, Cam. Her dad has remarried and is taking a trip while their home sales close. Cam takes Avery to his family’s house and gives her tips on how to win them over. Especially his mother, Kristin Chenoweth. (She is very judgmental right off the bat. I mean, who doesn’t love a twist of wine?!?!)
Avery and Logan are horrified to see one another, and Avery acts like they have never met. They secretly talk in the laundry room and try to decide what to do. Avery doesn’t want to give Kristin Chenoweth another reason to dislike her, as she is a “meanie.” (Haha, I love this writing.)
It turns out that Cam has a former friend/relationship similar to Avery and Logan’s story. Her name is Sophie, and she left to study abroad. Kristin Chenoweth likes Sophie and wants Cam to be with her instead.
While the family gets their portrait painted, Avery and Logan search for a Christmas tree at a tree farm. They come up with a plan to help one another out. Logan needs to come up with a business proposal for Stan. (Tim Meddows)In exchange, he will make Kristin Chenoweth like Avery.
When they get back, Avery is starving and eats some gummy candy in the coat pocket of her borrowed jacket. She doesn’t realize they are weed gummies until it is too late and they are at church service. The whole family watches Avery freeze in front of the congregation. Then Avery tells a VERY abbreviated story about Jesus and quotes Cool and the Gang. The chorus erupts into Celebration, and everyone claps along. Kristin Chenoweth is unimpressed, but the Pastor says it was the most engaging Christmas service EVER!
Avery eats all the Christmas cookies in a midnight munchie attack. She blames it on the dog and sends Kristin Chenoweth into a panic attack. Avery takes the dog to the bet, and Chris Parnell (the perpetual doctor) plays the veterinarian. After explaining what he must do, Avery sends Kristin Chenoweth to the waiting room and pretends to treat the dog, impressing her boyfriend’s mother.
The youngest 18-ish son, Callum, overhears Avery and Logan whispering in a room. He knows they used to date and blackmail them to do what he wants, AKA a booze run.
Speaking of drinking, the siblings go to a bar for fun. Cassie and Cam order shots for the table and are thrilled when Sophie shows up. Sophie tells Avery that she is still dealing with Kristin Chenoweth. Avery steps out to take an emergency call and sees the natural chemistry Cam and Sophie have. She returns to her family home with Logan, who hasn’t been drinking, to let the realtor into the house for an impromptu open house.
Late into the evening, Logan catches Cam coming home late. Cam asks Logan to keep it between them because he doesn’t want to upset Avery. Logan doesn’t keep it to himself and tells Avery because it doesn’t feel right. Avery tells him to stop trying to start shit, and he doesn’t need to worry about her.
Logan is finding out all the secrets when he goes to pick up his proposal to show Stan; he finds Kristin Chenoweth’s husband and Tim Meddows’ wife making out. Then Cassie surprises Logan with his mother and grandma. Even though she has dementia, Grandma blows the whole rouse up and exposes Logan and Avery’s lies. Cassie and Cam feel betrayed.
Since everyone is being honest, Callum exposes the weed dummies, Kristin Chenoweth tells Cassie Logan was thinking of proposing, and the affair is revealed, Cam hooked up with Sophie and everyone is upset. Christmas is ruined!!! Avery leaves, and Logan apologizes for blowing things up. Avery tells him not to call her.
The movie kind of meanders here. There is a montage set to an old Maggie Rogers song. Avery works on Logan’s proposal and asks Kristin Chenoweth to give it to Stan. New Year’s happens in slow motion, and Avery has no one to kiss.
Logan’s boss takes a meeting with Stan, and Stan doesn’t want the big fancy company. He wants Logan to work on the projects.
At a housewarming party, Logan shows up and gives a speech to Avery about the incredible woman she has turned out to be. He asks for a second chance, and she gives it to him. They kiss, and everyone cheers.
One Year Later. They are living together, and we see that they get married in a short cartoon ending.
Side Note/Stray Observations
This was the best of the Lindsay Lohan movies on Netflix so far.
Shout out to writer Hailey DeDominicis. Great first script, and I am looking forward to hearing more!
Not REALLY a Christmas movie.
