Synopsis (via Lifetime)

A woman falls for a handsome firefighter whose overprotective behavior turns to obsession.

Thoughts

The movie begins at a cabin in the woods. An older couple is sleeping with the door open, and their unattended fire sparks and burns the house down. The couple dies together while holding hands. Is this romantic? (I would have been so out of there.)

Cut to their daughters, Heather and Gwen. They do not get along. Gwen is already packing up the family belongings when Heather arrives for the funeral. (Which happened earlier that day, Gwen forgot to tell her stepsister.)

Heather and her BFF, Anika, go through old things. At the same time, Gwen and her husband Jason continue to sell items out from under Heather’s nose.

A hunk named Ben approaches Heather in town, apologizes for her parent’s death, and then asks her on a date. She declines because she is getting out of a messy divorce with a guy named Richard.

On a bike ride, Heather runs into Ben, who helps check out her squeaky bike. (Or does he cut out her brakes) because she almost goes flying off a cliff. Heather hangs on for her life as two hikers stop and try to save her. They fail, leaving Ben to be the hero. He pulls Heather up and slowly takes off his shirt to wrap her ankle. One of the hiker films the whole thing. (In landscape mode!)

Heather and Anika take the bike to the shop and learn that the bike has been tampered with. Heather is worried she has a Cinderella complex and only falls for men who save her. Gwen sees the video and tells Heather that Ben liked her back in high school; she was just oblivious.

Detectives show up with a video of someone setting the fire. Heather and Gwen are horrified. The video shows someone in a black hoodie running past the doorbell cam. Gwen wants to know Heather’s whereabouts during the fire. She accuses Heather of setting the fire for insurance money. While they talk, someone tampers with Heather’s car.

Heather has been stalked in the past and thinks someone is stalking her again. Ben shows up and gives her an old photo from high school and invites her to a firehouse chili cook-off.

On her way from the chili cook-off, Heather’s car catches on fire, and she drives off the road and into a tree. Her seatbelt holds her in the car, but she frees herself with her father’s pocket knife and escapes the car just in time. Ben, of course, saves her from the fire and they decided to start dating.

Richard, the ex-husband, is in town and was the one staking Heather. He claims just to want to give her the signed divorce papers, and he warns her that she is in danger. Heather goes with him on a drive to Ben’s house and shows her the proof that Ben is a bad guy. They find gasoline tanks and a serial killer wall with a shrine to Heather. Richard wants to call the police, but Heather decides to handle it herself.

Ben claims he is being set up. The police search his place and tell them that the photo wall is not enough to bring him in. Ben calls Heather and tries to explain, but Richard hangs upon him. Heather kicks Richard out of her house, and he is chased in his car and pushed off a cliff.

Anika and Heather do some art therapy together. (Which is basically doing pottery and listening to happy music.) Heather leaves art class and sees someone in a firefighter uniform chasing her with an ax. Ironically, a fire alarm saves her, and she manages to getaway. The camera follows the person in the firefighter’s uniform, and it is revealed that Gwen’s husband Jason was after Heather.

Jason is strapped for cash and trying to get his startup off the ground. He set fire to the cabin for insurance money and framed Ben. His next target is Heather. He breaks into the house with gasoline, dumps it all over the house, and lights it on fire. Then he goes upstairs, knocks Heather out, and calls Ben from her phone. He Lures Ben to the crime scene to incriminate him.

Heather comes to, and Jason goes into his villain monologue and even says he is sorry. Jason tells Heather that he is framing Ben and recruited Richard to help; when Richard was going to tell Heather, that is when he killed him.

Gwen gets a notification on her phone that the house is on fire and rushes to save her sister. Heather is locked in a room with some loose string. Ben comes to the rescue but is pepper-sprayed. Heather frees herself and knocks Jason out with a crowbar.

Just when you think Ben and Heather are done for, Gwen shows up, knocks out her pistol welding husband, and drags them to safety. No damsels in distress here.

Heather kisses Ben awake and says, “Welcome back, sleeping beauty.” Ben and Heather get married and are now pregnant. Everyone is happy—even Gwen, who wears sneakers with a dress. They all live happily ever after. K, Bye.
