Recap/Wine Thoughts
1990 a boating family takes a photo on a dock with their boat, The Darling Mary.
Flash to the present day and Liz has a job that she loves, an amazing daughter named Hannah, and a friend named Erica. Liz doesn’t have a good relationship with her father, Dennis since her mother passed away.
Back in the sailing town, Luke still lives in the town and helps his mother run errands, and he plays chess with Dennis. Dennis later is injured, saving a kid from a falling Christmas tree. Liz gets the call that she needs to return to the sailing town to help him.
Luke is there to greet Liz, and he even carries her luggage. Liz hasn’t been home in four years and thinks about entering the boat Christmas contest, which now has a cash prize of $25,000. Liz is surprised to learn her mother’s boat is still docked in the harbor and in bad shape. The Darling Mary isn’t so darling anymore.
At the Christmas tree lighting, Liz volunteers to join the decorating contest. She is ready to bring the Christmas spirit back into the family. It has been missing since Liz’s mother passed away, and Dennis gets ANDRY when he finds out.
Frank offers to help Liz and Hannah with the boat decorations after some begging from Liz. Liz and Frank end up spending a lot of time together decorating, gathering supplies, and sharing meals. They reminisce about their childhoods and Liz’s mother. Dennis enjoys having Liz, Frank, and Hannah back at home, and his spirit seems to lift. He isn’t as bogged down by grief.
Dennis shows Liz some old slides of her mother and talks about the financial troubles he is facing. He feels like a failure and misses his wife terribly. Liz tells her father that she misses her mother too, every day.
Back on the boat, things aren’t looking so great. The sails are torn and tattered.
Luke invites Liz to the Christmas Ball, and she shows up seriously overdressed. (I mean, they are drinking out of solo cups!!!) Liz and Luke slow dance. Their romance is supposed to be sparking something in me, but I’m not feeling them. He tells Liz that he loves her and always has, and SHE GIVES HIM A TENSE SMILE. Then they kiss like she is into it? Luke is planning on moving in with Liz and wants her to stay, but she tells him that she has a life back in Seattle that she can’t give up.
Liz worries about what her father is going to do if they don’t win the money. Dennis isn’t because he knows that Luke has always loved his daughter and will take care of the family. Dennis helps Luke with a surprise for the sailboat.
The boat parade begins, and it is fun to see, if not a little underwhelming on film. (It seems like an in-person thing.) The Darling Mary lights up and is very impressive. The crowd goes wild as the family waves from the boat. Dennis raises a sail and projects pictures of Liz as a child with her family. It is a surprise from Luke and touches everyone’s heartstrings.
Luke pops up from the boathouse and tells Liz that he isn’t going to wait till the time is right or let fate do all the work. They kiss and wave to the crowd while shouting, “Merry Christmas.” They, of course, win the boat contest and the money.
