During the holidays, a woman with amnesia catches a ride with her handsome nurse to investigate the only clue to her identity: a newspaper clipping for a Christmas Festival with a cryptic invitation.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts at a bus station in Maine. The weather is terrible, and a female traveler stops in Convington for some food at a local diner and walks to a nearby inn. On the walk, she is hit by a car and admitted into the local hospital after being pulled from the river.
Handsome doctor, Paul, is at the hospital when she is admitted, and he overhears that the woman is a Jane Doe from out of town. She wakes with no memory of who she is or why she is in town.
The Sherriff questions Jane Doe and hands her an article she left at the diner about a Christmas tree lighting in South Carolina. Some writing that reads “Please Come” from a man named Mark is on the back. Paul tries to jog Jane Doe’s memory by giving her the meal she ate at the diner. Pie and Coffee with sugar. Since Jane can’t talk about herself, she asks Dr. Paul about himself. He is struggling with the decision of if he should go home for Christmas. Jane Doe decides to go to the Christmas Tree lighting, and Dr. Paul offers her a ride. Cue a ROAD TRIP!
Paul and Jane drive and speculate about her past. It is a long way to go, so they stop at an Air BnB for the night. They watch The Bishop’s Wife together, and when Jane laughs at the movie, they learn her real laugh is goofy!!! As Jane gets ready for bed, she tries on a pair of earrings and has a flash of her previous life. She can’t decipher the clue.
Before they leave the following day, Paul and Jane help the innkeeper decorate the Christmas tree. The innkeeper gives Jane a Northstar journal and tells her that “God gives the strongest soldiers the toughest battles.”
Jane and Paul spend less time on the road and more time at cafes debating which is better, eggnog or hot cocoa. Then they stop at his friend’s house for a thinly veiled Campbell’s Soup ad. At dinner, Jane brings up Paul’s brother Ben and the conversation comes to a stop. Paul’s brother Ben is dead, so he is hesitant to spend Christmas at home. It will be his first without his brother. (Who was sick with Cancer.)
Another memory flashes when Jane touches a doorknob. She sees herself walking out on a man who is begging her to stay. She worries that she is a bad person. Dr. Paul tells her that she might have made mistakes, but mistakes can be forgiven.
Another stop in a Christmas town for Christmas things and family talk with Paul. His parents are also dead, and he didn’t go to his brother’s funeral. His sister-in-law hasn’t talked to him since Ben died.
They run into car trouble and need a new alternator. To kill time, they go to church and hold hands while listening to the choir sing a beautiful rendition of “Night Devine.” Then they find a stray dog outside and chase him around the town. They return the dog to Alison, freakin Sweeney?!?!
Back in Maine, the Sheriff finds Jane’s luggage and finds children’s clothing. Could Jane have a daughter?
Jane remembers her name is Rebecca and embraces Dr. Paul in excitement. It is awkward because she remembers Mark in her flashbacks, which seems like he could be a boyfriend or even a husband.
They make it to the Christmas Tree lighting, and Jane/Rebecca walks around aimlessly until Mark calls out her name. He hugs her, happy that she made it. A little girl is with him, and she hugs Jane Rebecca too. She tells him that she has amnesia. Then her sister, Annie, screams at her for avoiding their calls. Another memory flashes, and she realizes Mark is Anne’s husband and the kid is their daughter. Jane/Rebecca remembers an argument that she had with her sister about a job choice. They stopped talking after the fight they had last Christmas.
Paul sees Jane/Rebecca with her family and gets the wrong idea, and runs off. He calls his sister-in-law and apologizes for being absent in her life. She tells him that Ben loved him very much and was proud of his brother becoming a doctor. She is kind and forgiving. Paul visits Ben’s grave and leaves him the present he meant to give him the year he missed Christmas.
Jane/Rebecca makes up with her sister and unpacks her bags to stay for Christmas. She finds a kind note from Paul. She meets him at his hotel and tells him that her memory has come back. She explains Mark is her brother-in-law. Paul is relieved when she tells him that she has all her memories and something is still missing. Him. They kiss! The end.
