As a single mom and her teenaged son with autism come to a crossroad during Christmas, she must learn to let go so he can flourish as she finds her own heart healing in unexpected ways.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Lana and her children, Mia and Marcus, bake cookies together. She is a single mother struggling to give her autistic son the space to grow. (Speaking of space, Marcus loves space.) It seems like Mia loves music and feels somewhat neglected because of all the attention Marcus receives.
The family takes a road trip to spend the holidays with Lana’s ex-husband, Rick. They are trying to get Marcus into a special college program. Rick seems to be happy to have the opportunity to have his kids around. He helps Marcus get ready for the big interview and gives advice to Mia.
The interview goes well, and Marcus is offered a chance to stay the weekend for a trial run at Christmas. Lana is very worried about leaving him alone, even though they are just down the street.
Rick and Lana spend time doing Christmas activities, and he admits that he is single again, having recently broken up with his girlfriend of two years.
The inn owner, Beth, and her son, Henry, invite Lana and her family to spend the holiday with them as a family. Beth also has a daughter, Morgan, who is on the spectrum. Mia and Henry start connecting in a teen romance way; they also talk about being siblings growing up with a special needs child.
Mia shares how she feels with her mother, and Lana tells her daughter that she is very proud of her.
It is the night of the Christmas dance, and Lana goes as Rick’s date. Mia and Henry light up the tree together. Things seem to be going well until Rick is called into Chicago for work. Lana is upset because he hasn’t really changed after all.
The parents get a call that Marcus was injured. Lana fears the worst, but it is just a scraped knee. Lana wants to take him out of the school.
Then it is time for Marcus’s Christmas recital and Lana is impressed with her son and the school’s theatre program. Marcus thinks it is great too and wants to stay.
Rick and Lana decided to get back together and kiss while everyone watches. Then Mia plays a song on the piano.
