Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Reeling from the death of her beloved father and a difficult breakup, Monica (Raven Goodwin), is ready to move forward with her life as she tries to land the new hosting job for an afternoon talk show. When she hires a new assistant, Simone (Amber Riley), the two quickly become close friends as Simone moves in next door and completely immerses herself in Monica’s life. But underneath her sweet exterior, Simone harbors a dark secret and as time goes on cracks in her façade begin to appear. Monica decides to sever ties once and for all with Simone, but Simone has other plans and is determined to take over Monica’s life for good.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
TV host, Monica, attends her father’s funeral with her best friend, Bebe, and a set of windchimes. Her mother asks Monica to do the eulogy and gives her daughter notes afterward. She also disapproves of Monica’s horny/hunky boyfriend, Andre.
Two weeks later, Monica is working on her revenge body because Marcus breaks up with her. (He cheated on her! Andre says he didn’t do it and claims someone is setting him up.) Things are looking up at work, tho, because Monica is up for a new host position and will be competing with her co-worker, Elodie. Monica is set up with a new assistant, who looks very similar to her named Simone.
Simone has been doing her homework and knows everything there is to know about Monica. Simone overhears Elodie in the elevator talking about the promotion and how she has it in the bag.
The coincidences don’t stop with Monica and her new assistant. Simone bribes Monica’s landlord to rent her a room for a wad of cash. (Then she kills her.) Simone drops the same advice that Monica’s father used, “Sometimes you’ve got to make it through the rain to see the rainbow.” Over drinks, Simone gets Monica to open up about her father and soothes her while she cries. The following day, Simone makes Monica breakfast before work.
Elodie and Monica argue over the position; Simone attacks her in a parking lot and takes her out of the running for the job. With Monica’s trust earned, Simone shares what she overheard from Elodie. Then she gifts Monica Michelle Obama’s audiobook.
Bebe isn’t as much of a fan of Simone as Monica. Bebe warns Monica that she doesn’t trust her and then sages the house with Lawrey’s seasoning. (I love this best friend.)
Instead of hosting without Elodie because she is in the hospital, Monica cancels the live show and sends everyone home. To cheer Monica up, Simone takes her boss shopping. (Cue a shopping montage! Yas!)
Monica sends Simone to run trivial errands for her, like dry cleaning and other tasks. She also blows off her assistant with a date with the floor manager. Simone gets very jealous and tries to seduce the date in the elevator. Eric is FREAKED OUT.
Eric and Monica have a good date and an even better time in the bedroom. Simone watches them while having sex, then at work the next day, she calls Eric a minute man. Eric thinks Monica has been kissing and telling.
Monica meets with Monica’s mother, who tries to pay off Simone and tells her to stay away from Monica. Simone is Monica’s half-sister.
Simone freaks out and screams while breaking dishes. Then she stops by Monica’s mother and shows her the landlord’s head in a backpack. She also knocks out Andre when he comes looking for Monica.
Monica realizes that Simone is up to no good and breaks into her apartment. She smells the dead body and finds her dress and a DVD of Andre being drugged by Simone. Monica calls Bebe and tells her friend that she is right. Bebe tells Monica to beat her ass “like she stole from her.”
Bebe finds out that Simone killed her mother and was bullied mercilessly as a child. Both things sent Simone to a mental hospital. Bebe rushes to find her friend to tell her the news.
Monica confronts Simone and calls her a liar, and fires her ass. In the parking lot, Simone chloroforms Monica and ties her up. Simone explains how she killed the landlord and Andre, and took Elodie out to help Monica, her sister!
Monica tells Simone that she didn’t know she had a sister and would have loved to have a sister her whole life. Monica manipulates Simone into talking about her mother and Monica’s father.
Simone talks about the time she met Monica’s father. She wanted to be a family, but Monica’s father declined. That rejection causes Simone to kill Monica’s father. Monica keeps Simone talking long enough for Bebe to knock Simone in the head and untie Monica and her mother.
Simone wakes up and sets the house on fire. Monica stabs Simone with a pipe or something and kills her.
Monica becomes the host of the show! The end!
Side Note
The framed Oprah photo in Monica’s house was EVERYTHING! (I will be getting one!)
