Synopsis (via Hallmark)

In 1958, Maggie is an heiress from Philadelphia who puts her high-society wedding plans on hold in order to sneak up to New York City and make her secret dream come true: dancing live on stage in the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Lucy auditions for Clara in The Nutcracker, the other girls tell her that she only made it to the final round because her grandma, Margret, was a Rockette. Grandma Margret tells Lucy the story of her becoming a dancer in one of the most famous dance companies in the world.

Flash to 1956; two wealthy Philidelphia families promise Margret to Maxwell in an arranged marriage. Margret is skeptical of the man and is annoyed that he doesn’t even know her middle name. (Murry!)

At a dance class, Margret sees a flyer for THe Rockettes and actually makes it. She lies to her parents and tells them that she has arranged to meet with a designer for a wedding dress.

In New York, Margret’s friend Kitty invites her to stay with her, but Margret tells her that she will be staying at the Rockette home for dancers. Kitty disapproves because it isn’t a posh area.

Outside of the home, Margret bumps into a sailor named John. He is handsome and on leave for the holidays. She tries to get him to help with her bags, but it isn’t that kind of place because boys are not allowed inside.

Margret, AKA Maggie, is surprised she won’t have a private room. Her roommate is Sofia, who helps her adjust to Rockette’s life. Janet isn’t there to make friends, and Alice is the veteran performer. They rehearse six hours a day, six days a week.

Radio City Music Hall is expansive, and Margret takes a moment to take it all in. Rehearsals are demanding.

Eve Plumb (Of the Brady Bunch) plays John’s Mother, Harriett. She owns a market with her husband, Frank, and John works the register. He is surprised when Margret comes into the store for a snack after rehearsal.

The rehearsals are intense and include quick costume changes. The dancers grow closer through the process, and Margret comes clean about her double life. Janet is jealous of Margret’s money, and Sofia wants to borrow her designer duds. Sofia opens up too, and tells Margret about her twin sister who died from a hole in her heart.

The announcement of the cast for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Margret makes the cast. She will be shown on TV, but she doesn’t worry because he family doesn’t watch the parade on Thanksgiving. Her mother does see her on the broadcast.

In a Christmas tree lot, Joah and Margret bump into one another again. They have the perfect New York City night eating roasted chesnuts and enjoying the first snow. Josh takes photos of people in the city, and then they dance around.

Next, we get to see some REAL dancing from the Rockettes. It is pretty cool and makes me want to go see them live. The high kicks, Y’all! It is the first show of 100!!!!

John and his friend bring over a Christmas tree to the Rockette’s house and bribe the headmistress with a corn beef sandwich. While decorating, Margret asks John the same questions he asked her fiance-to-be. Margret sees herself in a light that she never has seen before in one of John’s photos. He tells her that is how he always sees her.

Kitty sees the show and encourages Margret to tell her family. Kitty is offended when Margret doesn’t seem thrilled to see her.

John and his parents also come and see Margret as a surprise. He takes her out for a stroll as friends, and they go look at the Rockafeller tree together. Maggie doesn’t tell John that she is engaged and starts to feel bad about lying.

Kitty rushes over and tells Margret to tell them that her parents are coming to town. She runs over and continues the ruse. Margret has to lie even more to cover why she is gone for most of the day at Radio City Music Hall. Her director Mr. Matthews gives Margret the day off so she can handle her business.

Maxwell is also in town, and they all have dinner together as a nice surprise. Margret drinks some bourbon straight to muster up the courage to tell them what is going on. Maxwell interrupts and gives her a ticket to The Radio City Rockettes. It is a perfect segway. She tells them, and her family is shocked and appalled. They are ashamed of her. Margret also tells Maxwell that she doesn’t want to marry him. He says he doesn’t believe in true love and is happy that she is happy. Her parents demand that she come back with them. Margret tells them that she will stay and make it on her own because she is a strong, confident woman.

Next, Margret tells John the truth about choosing New York, dancing, and being engaged. John is upset that she is lying about who she is. He tells her that he wants to get into NYU on his own and doesn’t need her money or connections to get into the school.

The girls meet in a diner and it is like a 1960’s version of Sex and the City. Alice tells the girls that she is going to retire after this season. Everyone gets teary-eyed.

Eve Plumb and Margret’s mother run into one another outside of the theater. She tells the mother that her daughter is meant to dance and Margret has found a man who loves him. Eve Plumb shows Margret’s mother John’s photo, and they join forces to make things right.

It is the last show of the season. Mr. Matthew promotes Alice to Dance Captian. John sends Maggie a gift backstage; it is a nutcracker pin.

With her mother and Josh in the audience, Maggie finishes the performance. Backstage after the show, Margret’s mother tells her how proud she is of “Maggie.” She also approves on John.

Maggie thanks John for the thoughtful pin. They kiss on the stage.

Grandma Maggie, tells Lucy that she can do it and gives her the nutcracker pin. Grandpa John joins them, and they kiss on stage too.

Side Note

Minority Report: Kitty, Alice,

This production shows an integrated group of Rockettes. Currently, only about 10 percent of the group are women of color.

The first African American woman to dance with the group (Jennifer Jones) was not included until the late 1980s. Initially, Ms. Jones only performed at the Super Bowl, not in regular Radio City shows. The reason given was that dark skin would “distract from the perception of identical precision.”
