Bright-eyed beauty and perfumer Ellie Reddy (Contractor) is tasked by her boss to create a holiday scent that will impress, so she decides to return to her quaint and festive family home for Christmas to find inspiration. There she meets handsome yet bookish writer, Logan Osborne (Selkin), who is staying with her father at the family’s historic property, which includes her mother’s former candle-making cottage. After finding her father struggling to keep her late mother’s candle business afloat, Ellie and Logan decide to complete the orders and inadvertently bring Christmas cheer back to the town, all while falling in love.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
We start off in a nasty-looking blizzard in maybe the 1800s. A couple tries to light lanterns in the storm.
Flash to modern times, at a holiday party where Ellie admires Christmas tree candle ornaments. Her co-worker Andrew interprets her to congratulate Ellie on her promotion, but it isn’t a done deal. Social media influencer/owner of a fragrance line, Nastia, will decide who gets the job.
Ellie heads home to New England for her first Christmas without her mother. (These people are East Coast rich.) her father runs a small candle shop in a log cabin on the property. When Ellie enters the cabin, she is surprised there is a chatty man named Logan. He goes for the hard sell for the candles and is in town as a guest. He is a storyteller working on an article about Christmas in New England. Ellie is not a fan of the strange man.
Logan follows Ellie around, and they walk through the town. He tells her that his dad was in the military and he has always traveled. So it is natural for him to be away from home. Ellie talks about her mother and how the candle business got started because of an old legend about young lovers.
The story goes that a groom was lost in a blizzard, and his bride-to-be lit candles to help him find his way home. She put them in the evergreens in the forest, and Christmas magic helped them reunite.
Jamir, Ellie’s father, falls behind on making Christmas candles, and the business lot is the big account. He is lost without his wife, and to add insult to injury, he slips on a patch of ice and injures himself. Ellie plans on getting her mother’s legacy back on track.
Andrew calls Ellie and tells her that Nastia hates all things PINE (She got lost in an IKEA once, and it smelled like pine.), and that was the scent Ellie submitted for consideration. She will have to come up with a new Christmas smell to submit.
Ellie stays up late working on candles and perfumes. Logan ups on an apron and helps her. (FOR THE STORY, NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE FALLING IN LOVE.) Making a candle turns out to be pretty romantic if you are doing it in a candle-lit room with soft music playing.
Logan uses his investigative skillz and discovers that Ellie might be related to the candle couple. They go to a metal shop that makes candle holders. The smell of Ellie’s bayberry candle with the candle holders may hold the key to a new smell for the candle AND the fragrance.
A woman named Agnes has a locket that belonged to Ellie’s grandparents. Oh, wait, she is just a crazy old lady, and Logan/Ellie are reading more into things to believe the fantasy.
Andrew sees the story online, and Nastia feels Ellie is using her perfume to promote the candles. It is a PR disaster. Ellie asks Logan to take the story offline to save her job.
Nastia calls Ellie to tell her that she is a firm believer in serendipity and wants to move into HomeGoods. She will release the candles and perfume. It’s too late tho because Ellie already told Logan to F off!
A blizzard rolls in, and Ellie lights the way for Logan to come back to her. He finds the lantern and makes his way back to Ellie with the love locket. He tells her that she is the flame to his candle, and they kiss.
Side Note
The toughest line to deliver with a straight face: ” That’s the thing about candles… THEY BURN OUT!”
