Synopsis (via Lifetime)
When Emilia and her daughter Sophie are left in an unexpected, dire financial situation, they discover an intriguing option to pay for Sophie’s college—entering a regional Mother[1]Daughter beauty pageant with a lucrative scholarship prize. But they don’t realize a competing mother-daughter team are willing to go to disturbing and dangerous lengths to win the crown.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Harper, a blonde pageant girl with a toxic mother, leaves a spin class while yelling on the phone. The gym parking lot is abandoned except for another Pagent Mom named Adeline. (She carries a LARGE water bottle.) Adeline tells Harper that her mother slept her way to the crown, and Harper pops off on the mother. (Says that Adeline is only a pageant mom because her mother pays for the competition.) Eventually, that water bottle is used, and Adeline konks Harper DEAD.
Emilia and her daughter, Sophie, celebrate a fantastic study abroad opportunity. Emilia worries about paying for the London trip and promises to do whatever it takes. That is when Sophie brings up a mother/daughter pageant with a $100,000 prize. (Ummm, that is as much as Drag Race!?!?!)
Adeline and her daughter Lilliana work out together. Lilliana won last year and is defending the crown. Lilliana is beautiful but still subjects herself to face peels and extreme beauty treatments paid for by her mother.
Ten mother-daughter teams make it past the application process and are invited to a meet & greet. The event is bougie (Not really, they have silk flowers EVERYWHERE.) We meet the mother/daughter teams, who are, thankfully, color-coordinated.
1) The Red Team consists of Patrice and her daughter Vivienne. (They are the favorite and both redheaded.)
2) Darcy and her daughter… who might be imaginary. (Oh no, she is real. Her name is Mia, and she seems over the pageant thing.)
3) Mackenzie and her daughter, Tatum.
4-10) The other mother/daughter teams don’t matter.
Adeline is really pushing to win; I mean, she literally killed someone already. Adeline blackmails Darcy into planting drugs in the front runner’s purse. Mia almost catches her mom putting the drugs into Vivianne’s purse. It doesn’t matter because Faye, the southern-ass judge, finds the drugs and suspends the frontrunners from the pageant.
Rebecca, Adeline’s mother, might be even more toxic than her daughter. Rebecca calls her daughter weak and bullies her in front of Lilliana.
Mia admits that she isn’t trying to win the competition. She is getting back at her mother, Darcy, for cheating on her father. Mia is intentionally throwing the competition and promises to help Sophie win. Mia makes friends with Sophie and even helps her with her walk.
Backstage at the preliminary pageant, Adeline ruins her town dress with a pair of child safety scissors from Emilia’s purse. Rebecca knows her daughter well and has the sabotage on video. She angrily demands that Adeline cool it and not put shame on the family legacy.
The Talent portion happens! (Including a montage!)
Lilliana does an interpretive dance and distracts everyone into clapping along while Adeline throws away the poem Sophie was going to read. When Sophie goes to read the poem, she is frazzled when she can’t find the paper. Instead, she recites it from memory and fumbles the words. Sophie blew it! The plan doesn’t work, and Sophie/Emilia make it to the final five.
Mia lifts Sophie’s spirits after such an embarrassing display. She invites Sophie to a pageant daughter sleepover party.
Adeline sets her sabotage sights on the judges. She forces Darcy to accompany her while she brides a judge who is also a member who also happens to be gay. When he refuses her advances, she kills him! (Rebecca is positive that her daughter is behind the mysterious death.)
Mia confronts her mother about sleeping with a married man. Darcy tries to explain to her daughter and cries while she is forced to withdraw from the competition by Mia. When Darcy goes to Adeline for comfort, Adeline is more focused on winning than friendship.
Lilliana starts to notice that things are off and asks Mia what is going on. Mia warns her that Adeline is up to no good.
Sophie also has suspicions about Adeline as well and looks into Harper’s death. Sophie tells her mom that she is concerned. Emilia decides to talk to Darcy and learns that Adeline was at the country club when the judge was murdered. Emilia asks to get a hold of the security footage, and Darcy agrees to help. The footage shows Adeline and the gay judge walking the trails at night, but not the actual murder.
Liliana’s dad arrives from Montreal and learns about the footage. He works with his daughter and Emilia and Sophie to get a public confession from Adeline by playing the footage mid-pageant.
It causes a scene, and Adeline screams for the video to stop playing. Adeline tries to explain that everyone is just jealous of her. When Sophie accuses Adeline of murdering Harper, Adeline lunges for her. Rebecca stops her daughter with a slap across the face, and Adeline grabs a knife from a cheese plate.
Adeline cries to her mother for never loving her. She is inconsolable. Rebecca is unmoved and says her daughter isn’t worth a single word. Who is the real villain here?
The pageant is shut down for good, and one of the judges, Vanessa, pays for Sophie’s study abroad expenses.
