Ellie (Clark), a serial ‘ghoster’ on dating apps, is told by a fortune teller that she must resolve her past and make amends with all those she ghosted before Christmas, or she is destined to never find true love! Over the course of one week, she takes it upon herself to track down all the men she ghosted before the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve and discovers love in the process. (2021)
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Chicago serial dater, Ellie, blows off guys after dating them. Also known as “ghosting.” Her brother Hunter and sister-in-law Caroline sit Ellie down and ask what went wrong with a guy they set her up with named Kevin. They want to know why she ghosted him. Ellie says that she didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
At work, Ellie is super committed and focused on video game design. A handsome co-worker named Charlie helps her with a tech issue instead of having fun at the work holiday party. He encourages Ellie to stop working and party with him. He calls her Ellie-nezer Scrooge and makes a bet with her to go see a hired fortune-teller for the party.
Ellie visits the fortune teller, who is using a snowglobe. The fortune-teller shares that she sees the letter “C.” She also accuses Ellie of ghosting many, many men. She tells her to make amends with these men by Christmas Eve, or she will never find true love.
Charlie and Ellie are teamed up for a project, and she tells him about what the fortune teller said. Charlie says that she should at least try to make amends, and he offers to help. Her reasons for ghosting them are petty and nitpicky, and Charlie judges her. Ellie sends many messages apologizing for ghosting to a list of guys.
Some guys don’t respond, and she tracks them down. Nate works at a cafe, and they go visit him to apologize. Nate thanks Ellie for ghosting him because he found his true love right after dating her. Next, they find a pretzel guy and apologize. Some other guy aggressively “ghosts” Ellie. Charlie and Ellie have a good laugh at the expense of all these men. It’s rude.
Ellie finds the last guy on her list, Kevin; he is sick, so she brings him some soup. He asks Ellie out again once she is feeling better.
There is one more guy she hasn’t met IRL (the movie says this term repeatedly.) Of course, that anonymous person she met on a dating app with no photos is Charlie. He was heartbroken when she ghosted him the first time, and he is nervous to tell him that he is “Blinky4Life.”
Ellie goes on a date, and it isn’t a match.
Finally, Ellie gets a message from Blinky4Life wanting to meet IRL. She rushes out to meet him, but Charlie shows up at her house. He tells her family that he is “Blinky4Life” and runs off laughing as they all cheer.
Ellie and Charlie meet in the Christmas market. Ellie tells him that she wants true love, not with Blinky but with him. Charlie kisses her at the stroke of midnight.
Side Note
Minority Report: Caroline, Marina, Kevin, Todd, Lena, Nate, Eddie,
This might be rude of me, but all of Ellie’s men were pinging my gaydar.
