Synopsis (via Lifetime)
The members of the Fallen Angels Murder Club must have two things in common — a love for books and have a criminal record. Hollis Morgan (Toni Braxton) meets both requirements. When a member of her book club is murdered in a scene straight out of the previous night’s novel, Hollis becomes the subject of police scrutiny. Refusing to get stuck with another bad rap, Hollis sets out to investigate her fellow club members and after a second book-inspired murder, she races to identify the killer before she becomes the next victim. Also stars Eddie Cibrian.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Toni Braxton plays Hollis, the host of a literal ex-felon book club. The Fallen Angel’s Book Club. The friends go to Rory’s new fancy house for some drinks afterward.
- Gene is a gay blogger
- Rene has a clothing line
- Abby is in real estate
- Miller is Smart
- Toni Braxton is an aspiring lawyer
It doesn’t seem that Rory is out of the crime business and spends the rest of the evening screaming into his cell phone. Toni Braxton suspects something is up. This is confirmed when Rory is positioned.
Cut to LeAnne Rimes’s husband as, Avery Mitchell. He is Toni Braxton’s boss at the law firm and assigns her a new client.
The book club is back and interpreted by two attractive detectives. They are looking into Rory’s murder and decide a murder mystery book club full of ex-convicts is as good a place to start as any.
The attractive detectives aren’t wrong; Rory was killed like the last protagonist in their book club book. The Fallen Angels Cub gets to work and search for clues at Rory’s funeral, which is a terrible idea and just downright disrespectful.
Detectives question Toni Braxton and she answers questions with questions. Making herself look more guilty, TBH.
Tony Braxton and Abby have martinis, and I’m REALLY craving a martini now. Then Abby goes missing.
Bill, Toni Braxton’s ex-husband, shows up and shares that he was working with Rory. He promises to protect her because a guy named Achillies killed Rory over a deal gone wrong. Achillies is framing Toni Braxton.
It turns out Abby was faking her own death. When the police find out she is alive, they suspect her of the murder of Rory. The book club bands together, and all admit to having the motive to kill Rory.
Toni Braxton puts together a serial killer wall and realizes that her boss Avery is behind everything. She goes to his office and finds a crime scene.
Avery goes into his villain monologue and admits to being Achillies. She interrupts him to call him a “lying, cheating, son of a bitch.” He doesn’t care and pours gasoline everywhere. (Which is an absolute waste in this economy.) He lights the place on fire with a Cuban cigar, which is a little on the nose.
Toni Braxton screams for help, and Miller comes to her rescue. She testifies in court WITH GLASSES ON! So you know they let her off the hook and off parole for the next movie where she can help others with her own law firm!
Side Note
Minority Report: Hollis, Abby, Miller, Gene, Detective, Rena, Mark, Bill, Rory, Farrah, AJ, Michael,
While I respect Ms. Braxton’s involvement as an executive producer/actor, this was a Hallmark Movie and Mystery knockoff.
This movie felt like a pilot for an ABC procedural series. No Lifetime tropes.

*** I’ve updated the rating system moving forward. Knives represent # of kills. Wine is over enjoyment (NOT a value judgment) on a 1-5 scale.
I will use the following tags for those who want to know whether to watch or skip: Pour it Up (Would Recommend) or Put A Cork In It (Would Not Recommend).

I actually enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would; however, I kept waiting for the detectives to view the security cameras in Rory’s house, which may have shown who the killer was because he announced the presence of the cameras when they arrived.
