Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Interior decorator Zuri Maxwell (Monique Coleman) had it all – a career she adored, loving family and friends, and a good man in her life, artist Stephon Gardner (Nathan Witte). But greed threatens to destroy everything, when Zuri meets handsome benefactor and entrepreneur Godfrey Anderson (Eric Benét) and his fabulously wealthy aunt Miss Viv (LisaRaye McCoy). They have everything Zuri thinks she wants. As Godfrey romances her, she compromises the values and morals that should guide her in an effort to be part of the moneyed world she so desperately wants to be part of.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The seven deadly sin series continues, and I’m just over here waiting for Sloth!
The movie starts with someone submerged in a pool while her house burns down.
Cut to Zuri, who is up for a new job with her potential boss, Miss Viv. (Who has made her money from shady retirement centers… or SHADY PINES?!?!)
Her longtime boyfriend, Stefan, asks Zuri’s father for her hand in marriage. Even though he doesn’t have much to offer, Zuri’s father already thinks of him as a son.
Godfrey Anderson is a man about town who chairs many non-profit boards. He meets Zuri at a literacy event, and they bond over wearing matching suits and her changing in the car. Because she is POOR!?! He is cousins with Miss Viv, and he knows about her being hired as her new interior designer.
Zuri starts to attend high-class Baltimore events, including a masquerade! Godfrey is impressed with Zuri’s work and commissions her to design his ultra-minimalist home. She wastes no time hooking up with Godfrey and cheating on her man!
Stefan takes Zuri out to celebrate her success, and the restaurant is very nice. Zuri is disappointed that Stefan doesn’t want to keep up with her and live up to his potential.
Zuri finds the engagement ring and thinks that it is too small; she tells Stefan to sell it to get his money back. Then she focuses on her relationship with Godfrey. (Which also turns into a business relationship. He gets her on the board.)
Godfrey is quick to ask Zuri for a loan to help him get capital for a potential investment. He pinky promises that nothing will go wrong. Zuri starts becoming materialistic and more focused on money than family. She barely cares when her father is injured in a fall, leaving Stefan to care for her father.
Miss Viv and Godfrey start looping Zuri into their shady business dealings, and she agrees to help for 10% of what they make.
Cue a SHOPPING MONTAGE! (Which will never get old, TBH.)
Zuri has a change of heart and realizes that she is in too deep. She tries to end the deal, but Miss Viv threatens to reveal to her clients that she has been swindling them. She confronts Godfrey, too, after looking through some files and finding out about Shady Pines. He calls her ambitious and greedy. Zuri doesn’t want to be the hustler by his side.
Zuri comes crawling back to Stefan, but he is too busy taking care of her father. Zuri sleeps in her car because she has nowhere else to go.
A Nurse that works for her father and Shady Pines tells Zuri about the shady things going on and shows her proof. Miss Viv pistol whips Zuri in the face. She also does the same to Godfrey when he tries to defend his ex-girlfriend.
Zuri wakes up to Miss Viv dumping gasoline on some curtains. She lights the house on fire, leaving Zuri to burn. She wakes up in time and jumps from the roof of the building into the pool.
The news comes out about Shady Pines, and Zuri is absolved of any wrongdoing. She apologizes to Stefan, who shouldn’t take her back. But does.
Side Note
Minority Report: The entire cast features Black actors in the principal roles.
Predictable movie, but Monique Coleman’s performance makes it worth a watch.

*** I’ve updated the rating system moving forward. Knives represent # of kills. Wine is over enjoyment (NOT a value judgment) on a 1-5 scale.
I will use the following tags for those who want to know whether to watch or skip: Pour it Up (Would Recommend) or Put A Cork In It (Would Not Recommend).
