Synopsis (via Hallmark)
When Jen gets the chance to enter a brand’s design contest, she poses as a family influencer, enlisting the help of her best friend, Max, and her baby nephew. When her video is selected as a finalist, Jen is torn on whether to go on with her perfect ‘family’ or reveal the truth.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Jen is a decor social media influencer but only has 420 followers. (My edible and I see what you did there, movie.) Her photographer friend, Max, is by her side and is the perfect Instagram Boyfriend. (He takes candids of her! But totally NOT her boyfriend!) Max is going out of town for work, leaving Jen to work with her sister, Ali. (Who is a new mom.)
Australian Level Attractive social media influencers Zoe and Charlie post a contest. They are looking for a new fresh face. The store the sisters are running is successful, but not enough, and Jen reconsiders submitting a video online. The sisters create a fake persona for Jen, Jen T who is a busy mommy mess! Max is going to pretend they are married and her nephew Reed will be their baby. The video they make is about “Blessing this mess!”
The video, of course, goes viral. Online sales are booming, and they get a bunch of followers. Ali pressures her sister to make another video to boost things even further and then be done. Jen is concerned about lying but goes along with it #XMAS
Liz, Jen and Ali’s mother, sees the video and is offended that she has been so out of the loop! She rushes to them to find out what is going on, oh, and maybe get some camera time. Liz has been estranged from her daughters since their father died because he has remarried multiple times.
People start recognizing Max and Jen, calling them an inspiration. Jen feels like an imposter but doesn’t have time to think about it because she makes it into the top 10 of the contest bumping her to 50K followers. Jen wants to quit, but Max and Ali talk about faking it a little longer.
Zoe and Charlie visit the top 3 finalists to get a read on them in person, including Jen! Oh and they are staying with the contestants in their homes! It is the worst news that Jen and Ali could learn.
Jen and Ali turn their mother’s holiday rental home into a fake house for the fake family. Liz agrees to let them take over is she can play the shockingly young grandmother to Jen and Max’s fake baby. Just in time for them to reach 100K.
When they arrive with a videographer (who films on an iPad), Zoe and Charlie are impressed with the place, but Baby Reed is acting up. Jen passes him through a window to Ali and pretends to put him down for a nap.
While shopping, Jen and Max kiss under the mistletoe. The fake relationship is starting to feel real. They decide to kiss some more later and entertain the idea of giving their relationship another chance. Then Max randomly tells Jen that he has a job in Portland and wants to take it. It is like he is testing her.
Jen wants a life with the perfect husband, house, and baby. It is not what she planned at all. It freaks her out. Ali encourages her sister to follow her heart.
Charlie and Zoe aren’t as perfect as they seem, either. They argue publically and tell Jen that they are separating.
Frazzled, Jen makes a speech thanking everyone who has shopped at her store over the holidays as she holds Baby Reed. The baby cries for his mama for the first time, and Jen decides she needs to come clean about the lying. Max storms off, and Jen chases after him.
Max tells her that it felt so real to him, and he tells her that he has never not loved her. He also doesn’t want to pretend to be her friend anymore either.
Social media trashes Jen and her store, and they lose all their customers. Jen stays off the internet and just wants to be her genuine self. She goes live and shows how she really is, just a sad and lonely girl. Jen apologizes to everyone.
Then Jen goes to her mother’s rental house and decides to spend time with Liz. Liz tells Jen that she needs to fight for Max.
Jen runs to find Max, and on her way, she runs into Charlie and Zoe, who saw her live and unfortunately still have to disqualify her, but they want to collab soon! (Oh, they are also together!)
Max shows up, and Jen apologizes to him. She tells him that she has always loved him too, and they kiss. Then they take a selfie. UGH!
Side Note
So if Hallmark is doing an Influencer Christmas thing, does that mean Instagram is dead?
I really felt like Jen and Ali were sisters.
