A reimagining of the 1985 comedic classic Brewster’s Millions starring the late Richard Pryor that follows Morgan Brewster (China McClain) as she embarks on a unique and challenging journey of delightful chaos to inherit her uncle Montgomery’s fortune before Christmas. Along the way, she discovers the true meaning of love, faith, and family through the act of giving rather than receiving
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Morgan Brewster is a heartless Chicago developer who is focused on the bottom line. She loves productivity, the finer things in life, and fierce business attire.
Thelma Hopkins appears as Auntie Brewster, who thinks Morgan’s opulence is shameful. The private jets, car service, and designer handbags are too much. She demands that Morgan spend the holiday with her family instead of $$$. Auntie cuts Morgan off and embarrasses her at a brunch with the girls. (Who were not offering to front the bill)
Morgan is thrown out of the restaurant and embarrassed. Auntie Brewster freezes Morgan’s account. She gives Morgan a part of Uncle Monty’s will. The will lists the tasks Morgan must fulfill to secure her inheritance. Auntie Brewster wants to retire and pass along the family business to Morgan, but she has no work ethic. (Or parents. They both died in a car crash, probably.) The list has to remain secret, and Morgan cannot use the Brewster Rolodex. The list includes:
1) Give someone a long and lasting home
2) Give a child a priceless gift
3) Open herself to love
Auntie Brewster assigns Andrew to help keep Morgan on track to complete her tasks by Christmas Eve. Morgan vents to Andrew about how unfair it all is. He will also be her personal chauffeur. (So it isn’t all bad!) With no condo to go to, Morgan decides to go to the transitional housing development she pitched. When she gets there, it is anything but luxury. The development was too boogie for transitional families to afford, so it has sat empty.
A resident named Opal lives in the development and invites Morgan to her place for a cup of tea. Her apartment is homey and decorated for Christmas, a far cry from the other ransacked units in the building. Opal has a thirteen-year-old daughter whom she lost custody of due to a bout with depression. Opal takes Morgan to a thrift story to fix up her apartment and then to the church singles mixer.
Time is ticking down, and Morgan has yet to check anything off her list. Andrew worries she is too focused on falling in love and pushes to make things start happening.
Morgan meets a kid who is trying to take care of his family. The kid hopes to become a singing star outside a celebrity’s house. The celebrity eventually spends time with the kid. He is so moved by the family’s story that he invites them to spend Christmas with him. Task completed!
Opal is terminated unjustly at her job, and Morgan threatens to sue. Morgan arranges a meeting with the boss. She uses her law school experience to confidently confront him. Morgan tells him off and secures the severance Opal deserves. Opal is excited to use that to get back on her feet and get her daughter back. Task completed! (Oh, wait! An investor buys Opal’s building, and they are all going to be homeless by the new year.)
Andrew and Morgan join Opal at a party to celebrate and hit the dance floor. Then they slow dance, and Morgan talks about how she feels bad for not treating her family right. They almost kiss, but Morgan closes herself off to love. NO CHECKMARK!
Back a church, Morgan sings. She comes to terms with the loss of her parents and Uncle Monty through singing “Indented.” It is a REALLY touching and well done performance.
Morgan overhears Andrew talking with his evil co-worker, Tiffany, they are suppose to be sabotaging her. Morgan packs her bags and Andrew tries to stop her. Morgan screams at him to get out and feels betrayed.
Andrew returns to apologize and wants to make things right. He works with Morgan to complete the list. The celebrity, Big Ty, buys the development and saves everyone from becoming homeless. Everyone from the movie comes and vouches for Morgan. Tiffany isn’t having it and interrupts saying that Morgan doesn’t deserve the praise. She is selfish. No one agrees with Tiffany. BYE TIFFANY!
Andrew tells Morgan he wants to be there for her if she is starting from scratch. They kiss at the deadline and Auntie Brewster unfreezes Morgan’s account and gives her the family business.
At the Christmas party, Opal is reunited with daughter! Yay! Morgan and Andrew kiss on the dance foor. Yay!
Side Note
This movie was good, but the pacing was slow and needed some tightening up.
Why was Romeo’s tie so long in church?
