Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Starring Stana Katic as a woman held hostage by an escaped convict, Michael Anderson (played by Tyler Pérez). Based on Ann Rule’s non-fiction work, the film follows Martha’s tense psychological battle to survive after she is forced to drive her captor’s getaway car.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

A woman with wavy hair, wearing a striped shirt, stands in a kitchen with a refrigerator covered in photos and notes.
Just a normal stripey shirt day!

Martha and her husband live in their lavish home as news reports of escaped prisoners from a local jail are everywhere. They aren’t paying much attention because they are too happily married, leaving notes on coffee makers and randomly scaring one another.

A man stands in a room holding a cloth to his face and looking at a small item in his hand. There are abstract paintings on the wall.
Truly, why do bad guys do this? Is this something people are into after they

They don’t need prank scares because one of the inmates in hiding in their house, making plans for new ID’s while also being a peeping tom and panty sniffer.

Martha comes across the inmate, and he knocks her out and ties her up. The inmate has a gun and tries to get as much money as he can from her. Martha fights back and tries to outsmart him, but when he threatens her son, he wants to stay until her husband gets home to get more money to make his escape.

A tense scene inside a house showing a man aggressively approaching another man, who appears alarmed, while a woman is partially visible in the foreground.

The inmate’s name is Michael, and he is working with another inmate… wait, are they twins? IDK if there are really two inmates in the house, or if Michael is lying for leverage. He unties Martha and makes her cook him a steak. Martha leaves clues like a bloody fingerprint on the phone to try to help the police find her. When her husband, John, comes home, they tie him up and take his car to go on the run. Martha is along for the ride.

A tense moment inside a car with a woman driving and looking concerned, while a man in the passenger seat appears to be speaking intently.

John escapes and calls the police at a neighbor’s house. SWAT is called in, and Bennett, the son, is saved, but Marthat is nowhere to be found. She is driving around with Michael, who tells her the other inmate (who isn’t real) is going to hurt her family if she doesn’t cooperate.

Martha learns that Michael was in foster care and actually needs to be a driver because he never got a license. Martha tries to connect with Michael, but he savagely beats her and says he will kill her if he has to. They end up in a parking garage, and he pranks her by saying he is going to kill her. Then he jokes that he is going to sleep with her. It is not funny. bro. He needs to take an improv class.

Michael forces Martha into the trunk, and they hijack another car at a gas station, kidnapping the gas station attendant named Doug, and robbing the cash register for 5K. Doug used to be an EMT and diagnosed Martha with a concussion.

A tense scene inside a vehicle, with one man holding another man by the collar, while the latter appears distressed and is crying.

Doug isn’t a great hostage. He is really scared and doesn’t have the same calm under pressure as Martha. Michael continues to make pranks, “I’m going to kill you with this very real gun, just kidding! You’ve been punked!”

Michael threatens to kill Doug because he doesn’t need two hostages, but since Martha is concussed, Doug takes over the driving. Martha asks Michael why he picked her, and he says it was because her garage was open.

A man and woman stand close together in a dark park, with the woman holding the man's arm. Both appear concerned or tense, while another man stands slightly behind them, looking away.
He just wants to go to college!

They stop at Martha’s university, and she tells Michael about her college memories. Michael thinks about a life that he could have had. Martha, being concussed, can barely stand and is throwing up. It isn’t a good look, so they leave.

A man leans out of a car window at night, appearing relaxed, while a woman sits inside the car, both in a dimly lit atmosphere.
This made me laugh

VERY RANDOMLY, the movie plays “Georgia, on my mind” while Michael hangs out the window feeling the wind in his hair. Is this a buddy-road-trip movie?

Michael doesn’t really have a plan, so Doug and Martha convince him to get a train ticket out of town and stop in a motel to rest. Michael watches intently as Doug goes to book the room and tips off the clerk.

A young man sitting shirtless in a chair, looking pensively at the camera, with a soft light illuminating his face and a window behind him.
Bless you, Lifetime

I’m not sure what happens in the motel room because Michel is shirtless, and I’m very interested in his cleavage tattoo. I appreciate the shirtless hunk quota being met, because this movie is kind of dragging.

Michael is spiraling and leaves Martha her wedding ring before going to the vending machine for a snack, where he is apprehended by SWAT.

A man and a woman share an emotional moment, standing closely together in a domestic setting. The woman wears a gray sweatshirt, while the man is dressed in a brown shirt. They appear to be gazing into each other's eyes, conveying a sense of intimacy and connection.

Martha is reunited with her family, and besides the concussion and a lifetime of PTSD, she is fine!

STRAY Thought

This was based on a true story of a 1978 kidnapping that nearly turned fatal after a prison escapee abducted a Washington woman.

Based on Ann Rule’s book, Smoke, Mirrors, and Murder: And Other True Cases.
