Synopsis (via Hallmark)
After her life in New York unexpectedly falls apart, powerhouse stockbroker Sam Wallace returns to her small town for the holidays and reconnects with her high school sweetheart, who helps reignite her humanitarian spirit just in time to help their community on Christmas.
Thoughts
Sam is so busy with work in New York that she barely has time to focus on her hunky boyfriend, Will. That is okay because he doesn’t care about her either. Halfheartedly gifting her a necklace instead of an engagement ring. Sam skips town and goes home for the holidays.
While home, Sam tries to avoid her do-gooder Noah, but it is the first place her mom takes her. Sam tries to hide from Noah, but her mother won’t let her avoid him. Causing an awkward reunion. They meet again at a bake-off and attempt to be less awkward. Sam left for New York because she felt trapped and didn’t tell Noah before she left. Noah doesn’t want to rehash old drama, especially since Sam isn’t staying in town.
After helping move a giant gingerbread house and making a Christmas wreath, Sam comes clean about how things aren’t so ideal in NYC. The huge opportunity she thought she was running to blew up in her face. Sam feels like being home is a failure.
Sam is inspired to throw a huge Christmas food bank event with one day’s notice as an opportunity to work with Noah and make herself feel useful again. Noah and Sam talk about who they’ve dated. Sam finds a Christmas ornament that Noah made her before she skipped town. He admits that he still has feelings about how things went down.
Finally, a setup for the big event montage happens. I’ve been waiting for the whole movie for this. The Heart of the Holidays kicks off and is a huge success. Sam feels proud of the work she has done and enjoys giving back. Will shows up and offers Sam a job. Noah sees them talking and thinks history is repeating itself.
Sam leaves to see what the job is all about, but not before receiving sage advice from her mother. The job is in fundraising and is more focused on the numbers than on the people. Sam realizes that she can give hope to people in need in her hometown. Sam breaks up with Will face-to-face, and THAT is progress.
Sam moves home, and her mother is thrilled. Sam rushes to find Noah and tell him the good news. When she finds him she basically tells him she is moving in with him, and he makes her happy. They kiss! The End!
