Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Romance sparks when a lonely true crime fan meets her favorite podcast host, but things soon turn strange as his fascination with her becomes obsession and his newest run of episodes appear to revolve around her eventual murder. Starring Brenna Skalski, Ian Reier Michaels, Alexandra Ponce, David Alan Hurt (2024).

Recap/Wine Thoughts.

The movie begins with a woman looking out the windows of her secluded home. (Good for her for having curtains!) Someone grabs her, but it is all just a dream.

The house and woman are very much real; her name is Ashley, and she jogs to true crime podcasts. While on her run, Ashley ignores calls from her soon-to-be ex-husband Paul. She packs up all his belongings and moves them into the garage. (All while still listening to true crime podcasts.) Ashley has yet to file the divorce paperwork because she is so BUSY listening to podcasts!

Lily urges Ashley to take care of the divorce before things get nasty. Then Paul shows up, banging on the door and demanding to be let in. Ashley tells him to leave, or she will call the police. (Ashley needs to change the locks.)

Ashley listens to more podcasts and looks into the host, David Bryant. He specializes in unsolved true crime. She buys tickets to his book signing and invites Lily to join her. The only problem is that Paul tows her car for service, and she has to walk to the book signing.

David preps for his book tour by trimming, literally, one beard hair and dumping his medication into the trash.

Outside the venue, David talks to a gaggle of adoring female fans. Ashley shows up and wows David with insights about true crime. He invites her to dinner, where she vents about Paul. (Who was abusive.) David warns Ashley that once their significant others get violent, it is likely to continue. Before they leave, he signs her book and gives her awkward cheek kisses.

Then David follows Ashley home and looks up Paul online. She will be the unwilling subject of his next podcast.

David invites Ashley to his podcast studio to see where the magic happens the next day, and she is flattered. David opens up about a classmate he dated who went missing after graduation. David blamed her boyfriend, who was from a wealthy family. Ashley encourages him to make an episode about them, but David declines because it is all too personal.

Ashley and David are worked up from all the true crime and have sexy time at her place. While she sleeps, he bugs the house and makes a wax impression of her house key.

David sets it up to look like Paul is breaking into her home and making Ashley feel unsafe in her home. She spends the night with David, and when she returns to her house, someone has been inside and left a kitchen knife on the bed.

Ashley calls the police, who aren’t very sympathetic. Ashley calls her friend Lily and finds recording equipment around her apartment. They realize David is setting up Paul to manipulate Ashley. (Paul has an alibi.)

David tells Ashley he has been working on a new podcast episode and invites her to his place. He tells her that it is a surprise and offers to make her dinner. Ashley hacks into his computer while he cooks and listens to the new episode all about her. Then she rushes out of there.

Ashley searches online and finds the number of the detective who worked on the missing high school case from David’s past. The detective is straightforward and calls David a murderer. The detective goes to talk with Ashley in person at Lily’s house.

In the next scene, David proves this to be true by attacking Paul in a parking lot. (And Probably killing him?)

Then David goes to Lily’s house and hits the detective with a shovel. After chloroforming Lily, David takes Ashley to the back pool, where Paul is tied to a chair and starts recording his podcast, haha. David admits that he killed his high school girlfriend.

Ashley has to kill Paul to “free herself,” and the act of revenge would be perfect for his podcast. He begs her to give him the ending. Ashley holds the knife and stabs David instead. She unties Paul, and David grabs her before she throws him in the pool.

Ashley guests on a podcast to try and summarize the moral of the story. The end!

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

  1. First and foremost what is up with these houses that have front doors and no screen door with all these glass panes. I would not feel safe at all

  2. What is up with these houses with a front door , no screen door, and more glass panes than door. Doesn’t seem safe at all

  3. Pheww…I was hoping I wasn’t the only one wanting to put a cork in it. This movie was boring and anyone could see that dude was Crazy Man Walking.

  4. I swear I heard that ringtone like a total of ten times in the movie. So annoying!
