Synopsis (via Lifetime)

After a struggling single mom’s daughter takes money from a dying bank robber, the two become entangled in a tense investigation that threatens everything they love.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

A man with a beard and tattoo sits on a chair outdoors, holding a firearm, surrounded by trees.
The 98 degrees tattoo made me laugh

The movie begins with a doomsday prepper turned bank robber, who is chopping trees and practicing saying, “Put the money in the bag.”

A text message from Anna at 9:44 AM shows her smiling while taking a selfie in a car, highlighting a milestone of 200,000 miles on the vehicle's odometer.
Wow, I’d be so annoyed if my mom texted me this

Cut to penny-pinching single mother, Laura, whose car just hit 200K miles. She works as a home care nurse to make ends meet and will be picking up a night shift at an auto shop. Which is good because her car is barely hanging on.

Anna is a lacrosse star, a team leader, and fearless. Anna wants to make something of herself and go to an expensive college. (At least get a scholarship, girl!) Laura has to call Anna’s dad to beg for money.

A smiling young woman wearing a purple helmet and a striped long-sleeve shirt is sitting on a bicycle in a natural outdoor setting with trees in the background.
The Helmet. I love the commitment to safety

After a winning game, Anna goes out with her friends. Meanwhile, the bank robber goes through with his plan and is shot. He parks his truck on a side road that Anna rides her bike home on. She comes across the truck and, more importantly, THE MONEY! Anna calls 911 to report the bank robber, and she swipes a few unbloodied bills… I’m assuming.

Detectives are working on the case and have some questions for Anna, but first, they give her a Good Citizenship award. Anna is nervous because she stole stolen money and shows it to her friend Max. Max stores the 10K at his house to keep suspicion off his BFF.

A young woman with long red hair drinks from a large glass while a young man looks on in a bedroom setting with posters on the walls.
Should have been Malibu

The pressure eats at Anna, and she chugs rum at Max’s place. Then she passes out and blames Max for oversleeping. Anna is tired of being perfect, and this whole money-stealing thing has really sent her into a spiral. Anna ends up in the hospital from a hangover?!?! What kind of lame teenager is she? Anna wants to return the money and tells Max she is giving it back.

The detective is the brother of the man who just so happens to be the bank robber. When Laura and Anna try to return the money, he blackmails them. Then he hurts Calvin, Laura’s patient.

A woman with a distressed expression, wearing a maroon polka dot top, sitting in a dimly lit room with visible tears and smudged makeup.

Laura clears out her life savings, and the detective doubles the payment because she was a week late. Then he attacks Monica’s husband in an alley to make sure Laura pays. WHO IS MONICA?!?! Then he kidnaps Anna. Then he runs over Max and kicks the poor guy while he is down. This detective is emboldened.

A man in a black suit with short, wavy hair sits in a natural outdoor setting, appearing contemplative. The text overlay promotes the premiere of the movie 'Murder at the Merriweather' on Lifetime.

The detectives’ partner suspects he is up to no good and works with the mother and daughter to catch him in the act. I’m not exactly sure what happens because this movie dropped so quickly into WTF territory.

A young woman with long red hair, wearing a bright orange safety vest over a gray shirt, is speaking with a woman facing her in a well-lit indoor setting.
So she is a bus driver now?

The bad detective shoots the good one, and Laura is hit. In the end, everyone is saved, and I think Anna goes to community college or something. Maybe she does service learning hours? Who cares.

STRAY Thought

This poster was atrocious, but the execution was even worse.

The bank robbing budget was zero. The most interesting and suspenseful part isn’t even shown.
