Synopsis (via Lifetime)

After Jimmy breaks up with Theresa (Jasmine Vega), her over-bearing mother, Mary (Ana Ortiz), becomes obsessed with mending their relationship after learning that Jimmy took her daughter’s virginity. Determined to reunite the couple, Mary does everything she can to convince Jimmy to change his mind… including bribing him. When her tactics fail, Mary becomes desperate and her meddling ways turn to murderous when she enlists the services of a fortune teller named Anna (Sheila E.) and hitman to murder Jimmy in attempts to reclaim her daughter’s purity.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Inspired by True Events.

McAllen, Texas, 1992, Mary mourns her son’s death in a car accident that happened 17 years ago. She has a shrine dedicated to him in her living room. Mary raises her daughter, Theresa, who can’t hold a candle to her long-deceased brother. Mary also is a believer in the supernatural and goes to Shelia E. for regular readings.

Theresa is kind of a slut, according to her friends, and has a crush on a juvenile boy named Jimmy Simpson. When he asks her out, Theresa gushed to her mother. Mary insists they must have a family dinner ifora date. Jimmy surprisingly agrees and charms Theresa’s parents. (They ask him his GPA. Haha, like that matters!) Mary waits up for her daughter to hear how things went and tells Theresa to hold onto Jimmy, because he is a catch.

Jimmy, of course, is a known womanizer and tries to convince Theresa to sleep with him, even though she is worried about ruining her reputation. Eventually, he gets his way after much flattery. Jimmy gives Theresa his class ring, and Mary treats it like they are engaged. Mary begins meddling right away, and basically, Jimmy starts having doubts about his future with Theresa.

Mary really gets ahead of herself and plans for an engagement. She wants to control every aspect of their lives because the loss of her son totally caught her off guard, and Mary won’t let that happen again. After a reading, Mary starts to wonder if Jimmy is pressuring her daughter into having sex.

Jimmy starts to feel that Theresa is being too clingy and jealous. The young lovers get into an argument, and Mary is sure it is Theresa’s fault. Jimmy apologizes with ice cream. Thresa forgives him for going to a friend’s party over her Abuela’s birthday.

Mary isn’t so forgiving and tracks down where the party is. She finds Jimmy hooking up with another girl. Theresa and Jimmy break up, but when Mary finds out that her daughter isn’t a virgin anymore, she demands they get back together to keep up appearances of a perfect life.

Jimmy gets a call from Mary, and she tells him to apologize and get back to Theresa. When he doesn’t go for it, Mary goes to Sheila E and asks for a spell to cast on Jimmy and she does some mumbo jumbo on Jimmy’s letterman jacket. It doesn’t work, so Jimmy asks Theresa for his class ring back.

Mary goes back to Shelia E and demands something that works; Sheila E gives her a Voodoo doll. When that doesn’t work. Mary offers Jimmy $500 a month to date her daughter. Jimmy tells Mary that he won’t whore himself out for money.

Gossip gets back to Mary about her daughter sleeping with Jimmy, and she wants to punish Jimmy for taking her daughter’s virtue. The only way for Theresa’s virginity to be restored is if the man who took it dies. Mary pressures Shelia E to hire a hitman to kill Jimmy.

Jimmy has a change of heart and apologizes to Theresa for making her feel like she was just a conquest to him. He validates his real feelings for her, but it is too late. The hit is happening.

A hitman for hire walks up to Jimmy while he washes his car and shoots him in cold blood. Theresa and her mother are at the doctor’s, so they have a solid alibi. Theresa has no idea about her mother’s involvement, but she starts to have a suspicion because her mother shares the whole reversal of virginity thinking.

Detectives are on the case and trace things back to Shelia E. She spills the truth about Mary and the hit on Jimmy. She agrees to wear a wire to entrap Mary. They end up just yelling at one another, but it is enough to arrest.

Mary is found guilty of capital murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Theresa visits her mother in jail and demands to know the truth. Mary refuses to give it to her, and she is not sorry for what happened to Jimmy.

Side Note/Stray Thoughts

The film is inspired by the case of Joey Fischer, who was murdered by hired killers employed by Dora Cesarnes, the mother of Joey’s ex-girlfriend. While the killers fled to Mexico, Cesarnes and her other accomplices were convicted and imprisoned.

I was expecting to really like this, but the lead wasn’t desperate/obsessed enough for me to result in murder.

  1. Is it just me or has anyone else heard of this virginity thing? Since when does a chick get back her virginity if the guy who “took it” croaks?! That doesn’t even make sense to me. But the. Again, I’m not a cray cray mom.

  2. OMG. It’s no wonder Jimmy dumped Teresa. Her mom is psycho. I mean the kids are still in high school but she has them married with kids already. And definitely not having any fun. If my mom had EVER done anything close to what this one did, I think I’d kill HER. Going to that party looking for Jimmy?! Psycho. I understand her son died a long time ago but her behavior is plain old crazy. If she wanted to hold someone responsible for the end of Jimmy/Teresa she should have blamed herself. And ONLY herself. Instead of having him killed (which is a whole new level of insane) maybe she should’ve killed herself? I know that sounds harsh but since she was responsible for everything it was ALL in fault. I wonder if the daughter ever spoke ti the mom again(in the true story). If the daughter forgave the crazy b××ch

  3. OMG. WTF is wrong with the mom?! She’s definitely cray cray. She’s pathetic. If my mom had behaved like Mary did(even a little bit) I would’ve killed her. Talk about embarrassing. She totally pushed Jimmy outta Theresa’s life. It was Mary’s fault Jimmy dumped her, definitely NOT Theresa’s. Telling him she and her hubby got engaged after 2 weeks etc. Who the hell says that to their kids love interest?! Nowadays most parents would do the opposite. When I was younger by mom told me to go to college, get a career and THEN think bout relationships. That way I’d always know I could take care of myself and didn’t NEED a guy. And that’s exactly what I did. I’m so thankful for mom’s advice.

  4. How does a chick get her virginity back if the guy she lost it to dies? Makes no sense, in any way shape or form. The chick still had sex with the guy. I guess I cant understand this cuz I’m not totally insane. What blows my mind is that this a true story. It would be bad enough if a script writer wrote this. But being true is next level insanity. When i see some of these movies where people’s actions are over the top cray, and I find out its supposedly true, I realize there’s lot of psychos out there. And those are just the cases we know about. Imagine all the crazy cases we don’t know bout. Scary huh?! Moral of these stories are watch out who you screw with. It could literally kill you. Lol
